HBO’s hit series True Detective is returning for a third season with Oscar Award-winning Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali as its star.
After months of speculation, HBO announced yesterday that a third season for the popular crime anthology series was officially green-lit. True Detective series creator Nic Pizzolatto will direct and pen the script, Jeremy Saulnier (The Green Room) will also direct and Ali will star as the title character Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.
It was touch-and-go if a third season of True Detective was really going to happen. Then, in July, HBO programming president Casey Bloys announced the Moonlight actor would lead the new season; however, the green light for a third season was contingent on finding a suitable director and technically wasn't officially official...until now.
Unlike season two’s California setting, the third installment will be set in the heart of the Ozarks (yes, like the Netflix series...), a crime-ridden highland region located in the central U.S. It will take place in three separate time periods and introduce viewers to a timeless mystery that intensified over the decades.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will also return as executive producers. Hallelujah.
