As fun as summer travel is (The tan! The Instagram snaps! The memories!), jet lag is a major drag. So when Tracee Ellis Ross, traveler extraordinaire and star of Black-ish, shared three brilliant ways she avoids that “What time zone am I in?” feeling, we took note.

The actress and director tells PureWow that her solution for banishing pesky jet lag is simple, 100 percent free and works no matter where you go. The best part? Her hacks totally worked when we tried ’em.

In an interview on her partnership with the United Explorer Card—which allows travelers to accrue two times the miles whilst satiating wanderlust—Ross revealed, “Some of my best jet lag hacks are taking a bath when you arrive, and also [setting] your watch for the time that you are arriving to. Don’t do that thing where you constantly count back and say, ‘It’s 8:00 in the morning for me,’ or, ‘It’s dinner time now,’ or, ‘I should be sleeping.’ You literally have to like mind trick yourself to be where you’re at.” Um, we’re totally guilty of counting back…

The Golden Globe winner went on to say that walking (no matter how tired you are) is a great way to acclimate your body to a new time zone and explore your new surroundings. “After a long flight, if you can’t take a bath, or even if you can, go for a walk and actually remind your feet that you are on the ground, because there is something very confusing for the body when you’re in the air for that long,” Ross explained.
