PSA: If You Live in One of These 6 States You Might Be Able to See the Northern Lights Tonight

For those who have always wanted to catch a view of the northern lights, or aurora borealis, but can’t pop over to Scandinavia, Canada or Alaska anytime soon, you may be in luck. According to multiple national weather agencies, the dancing lights will potentially be visible in six states across the U.S. after nightfall on March 14.

Which states, you ask? Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Maine.

Why tonight? A minor solar storm is likely to supercharge and amplify the northern aurora, making the lightsvisible to areas they’re usually not (i.e., states in the northern tier of the United States...sorry, Florida).

Want to find out when and where you’ll have the best chance of spotting the northern lights? Check out Aurorasaurus, which crowdsources aurora sightings.
