Ryan Reynolds Shares What It’s Like to Have His Daughters’ Names in a Taylor Swift Song

If there's one thing we can count on when Taylor Swift releases an album, it's a lot of Easter eggs. The 31-year-old singer-songwriter loves to throw clues into her songs about different aspects of her life, and when she dropped her surprise album folklore last year, there were plenty of tidbits for fans to dig up. One of those included a special reference to the children of her good friends, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.

The names of the couple's three daughters—James (6), Inez (4) and Betty (1)—all make an appearance in Swift's track “Betty.” Swift, who has been a longtime friend of the pair, wanted to create fictional characters with the names and draft a story of a love triangle.

In a recent SiriusXM Town Hall, Reynolds opened up to Jess Cagle about what it was like for Swift to use their daughters' names in the song. “We thought it was pretty, pretty damn amazing. We still do," he said. “You know, I still walk down the street and shake my head thinking 'I can't believe that happened.'”

Swift had reached out to the couple to ask permission before using the names for the track. Reynolds said, “We trust her implicitly and she's very sensitive to any of that stuff. And obviously the song has nothing to do with our kids other than our kids' names.”

Reynolds and Lively also kept the news a secret from their daughters until the song was released. “We surprised them with it. Yeah. They didn't know," the Deadpool actor said. He humorously added, “We don't tell them anything. We find they're most compliant if you offer them no access to outside information.”

Not everyone can say they've had their name forever immortalized in a Swift song. We'd be pretty excited too.
