How does one train to become the king of England, you ask? For Prince William, it has involved rigorous prep beginning at the age of 14 and guidance from someone who has decades of experience—Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
According to Robert Lacey, a historian for Netflix’s The Crown, Queen Elizabeth has been prepping Prince William to take over the throne since he was a teenager. “When William became a teenager, she would have him at Windsor Castle and would open the state boxes and guide him through the papers. It was William’s constitutional education,” Lacey revealed.
Although Prince William is second in line to the throne behind his father, Prince Charles, many royal aficionados question whether Charles will fulfill the role or pass it on to his son. “It’s no secret that she and Charles have had a prickly relationship at times,” Lacey added. “There has always been a special closeness between William and the queen, and she has taken a particular interest in him.” Hellooo, royal family drama!
It may be a while before we see King William, but at least we know he’s being groomed by the best, and by the best, we mean the longest standing British monarch in history.
