Queen Elizabeth matches her umbrellas to her outfits, she’s in charge of bedtimes and she’s the leader of 53 sovereign states. Simply put, she’s a woman who knows what she wants and she doesn’t just do things on a whim. Which leads us to wonder, what’s up with all the brightly colored skirt suits?

According to the documentary The Queen at 90, there’s a very specific reason for the queen’s fashion choices, and it goes beyond color preference. As Sophie, Countess of Wessex explained in the film, “She needs to stand out for people to be able to say, ‘I saw the queen.’” Bloody brilliant.

The countess went on, “Don’t forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, ten, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the queen’s hat as she went past.”

In fact, Queen Elizabeth’s biographer Robert Hardman even revealed that she once told him, “I can’t wear beige because nobody will know who I am.”

Leave it to the queen to peacock for the good of the people.
