Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding is finally here, and it's an extravagant affair (judging from the first pics from the weekend). Meha Bhargava, owner of STYL-INC, specializes in working with Western couples to create the traditional Indian wedding of their dreams. As such, she knows all that goes into a wedding like Chopra and Jonas’s. Here, three things Bhargava says we can expect to take place during their wedding weekend.
Pre-Wedding Events: Unlike Western weddings, traditional Indian weddings include more than just a reception and ceremony and can last as long as a week. In addition to the actual wedding, Chopra, 36, and Jonas, 26, will likely host Sangeet, Mehendi and Haldi services. The Sangeet is essentially a dance party held the day before the wedding. The Mehendi ceremony takes place that evening. This is when Chopra will be decorated in henna designs, which Bhargava says bring “positive spirits and good luck.” The Haldi ceremony is held the day of the wedding and will likely take place at the Chopra family residence. Bhargava says this is the most important pre-wedding ritual. During it, a paste made of turmeric (Haldi), curd, sandalwood and gram flour is rubbed onto the bride and groom’s skin. This is followed by a ceremonial bath.
A Sundown Ceremony: Most Indian wedding ceremonies take place at sundown, although the couple likely consulted with a priest to determine the most auspicious time for them.
Multiple Outfit Changes & a Lot of Color: Each occasion calls for a different outfit (except for Mehendi and Sangeet since they take place on the same day). During Mehendi and Sangeet, Bhargava explains, Chopra will wear a lehenga (traditional Indian suit) with short sleeves and a loose pants or a skirt so henna can easily be applied to her hands, feet and limbs. Jonas is expected to wear a kurta-pyjama with a jacket. Guests will don similar outfits, with women wearing lehengas or saris and girls wearing crop-tops and skirts or anarkalis (a dress and pants combo). During the Haldi ceremony, both the bride and groom will either wear yellow, ivory or a pastel color. And during the actual wedding ceremony, Chopra will wear a lehenga in any color but black, dark blue or white, and Jonas will wear a sherwani (a long coatlike garment).
The couple had a Christian wedding on Saturday in addition to the Indian ceremony, which Bhargava says she expected.
Needless to say, we can’t wait to see more pics.
