10 Things We Learned & Loved from HBO’s Princess Diana Documentary
August 31 marks the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana's untimely death, yet her presence is still strongly felt. Last night the long-awaited biopic, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, premiered on HBO and our tear duct reservoirs still remain completely depleted.
The documentary features Princess Di's two beloved sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, speaking openly and in depth about their late mother's tragic passing for the first time. It also offers an unparalleled glimpse into the late Princess of Wales's private life and the devastation felt by the royal family in the wake of their tremendous loss. Here, ten of the most touching moments from Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, available to stream now on HBO.
When Prince William Shared Why He & Prince Harry Decided to Speak Out Now
William mused, “Her 20th anniversary year feels like a good time to remember all the good things about her and hopefully provide maybe a different side others haven’t seen before.” Bless his heart.
And Prince Harry Spilled the Beans About Her Proclivity Toward Sneaking Them Into Movies
“She made the decision that...she was going to ensure that both of us had as normal lives as possible,” Harry is seen wistfully remembering. “And if that means taking us for a burger every now and then or sneaking us into the cinema, or driving through the country lanes with the roof down in her old-school BMW to listen to Enya [I think it was]... part of her being a mom.”
When Prince Harry Remembered Her Sweet Hugs
“Even talking about it now, I can feel the hugs she used to give us and you know I miss that...,” he heartbreakingly shared. Good thing he has overwhelming support from his bestie and sister-in-law Kate Middleton and that delightful Meghan Markle by his side.
And Prince William Laughed About That One Time She Surprised Him With a Trio of Supermodels
Princess Diana once surprised her eldest son by inviting Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington to swing by Kensington Palace for a very special visit. Needless to say, the 12-year-old prince was beside himself.
When Prince Harry Called Her the ‘Best Mom in the World’
Even though she's gone, Harry still thinks the world of his mother. “She was our mom, she still is our mom, you know, and of course, as a son, I would say she is the best mom in the world.”
And Prince William Felt Her Presence At His Wedding to K-Middy
“When it came to the wedding, I did really feel that she was there,” William touchingly shared. “There are times when you look to someone or something for strength, and I very much felt she was there for me.”
And Prince Harry Giggled At How She Dressed Him & His Brother
Harry remembered that his mother dressed him and older brother William “in the most bizarre outfits” because she thought it was funny. Oh, Di, you jokester.
When Prince William Spoke Out About His Pain Over Losing His Mother
We totally teared up watching William describe the feeling of losing his mother, saying, “There's nothing like it in the world, there really isn't. It's completely and utterly...it's like an earthquake has just run through the house and throughout your life and everything.” He continued, “Your mind is completely split. It took me a while to actually—for it to sink in.”
And Prince Harry Recalled the Last Conversation He Had With Mom Princess Di and It Really Hit Home
Our hearts went out to Harry when he said, “Looking back on it now, it's incredibly hard. I have to sort of deal with that for the rest my life—not knowing that was the last time I was going to speak with my mum. And how differently that conversation would have panned out if I had even the slightest inkling that her life was going to be taken that night.”
And Finally, When Prince William Made Us LOL with His Theories About Her Grandparenting Style
Prince William makes sure his two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, are aware and remember their wonderful late grandmother, Princess Diana. But, he (jokingly) worries what she'd actually be like as a grandma. “She'd love the children to bits, but she'd be a nightmare. She'd come and go, she'd probably come at bath time, cause an amazing amount of sea and bubbles and bathwater all over the place and then leave.” And what a lovely grandma Princess Di would have been.
