From shoulder-baring neutrals to sleek LBDs, Meghan Markle has her royal style down—but what does it say about her new role as the Duchess of Sussex?

In the new ABC News special, Meghan’s New Life: The Real Princess Diaries, experts (like PureWow’s own Royally Obsessed podcast hosts Kaitlin Menza and Lisa Ryan) reflected on how the 37-year-old duchess’s fashion choices have shifted since her royal wedding.

Menza remembered, “There was a brief moment immediately after the wedding, [when] she wore basically the same outfit over and over again—a lot of blush suits that were very ’90s-looking with panty hose.”

At first, the Royally Obsessed host worried Markle was toning down her individuality because of her new royal status, but she grew to see it differently. “I think that was a conscious choice and she was kind of telling a story of like, ‘I am a royal now,’” Menza explained.

ABC corespondent Deborah Roberts echoed Menza’s thoughts, explaining Markle’s style evolution as her “adhering to tradition with her own sense of flair.”

That’s basically Markle’s royal M.O. (and we love it).
