Lin-Manuel Miranda Releases Never-Before-Heard ‘Hamilton’ Song

If you’ve listened to the Hamilton soundtrack one too many times, then you’re in luck.

Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda just released a never-before-heard song from the Broadway musical, titled “I Have this Friend.” Although the track was cut from the show, the 40-year-old actor revealed that he originally wrote it in place of “Hurricane.”

“This was my first draft of the song before the ‘Reynolds Pamphlet,’” he explained. “With Hamilton & Washington. I don’t think I even showed it to Tommy Kail. It would go where ‘Hurricane’ is now. Stay safe out there. Love you.”

Miranda is referring to Kail, who directed the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Hamilton and In the Heights. Since the song was included in his first draft, it was likely never produced and—therefore—didn’t exist to the general public…until now.

Miranda is currently working on bringing the magic of Hamilton to the big screen with a brand-new movie. Kail reportedly filmed the stage show during its debut run, which means that it will star the original Broadway cast. Miranda is waiting on the right time to release the Hamilton film, revealing that it will be “sooner rather than later.”

If you need us, we’ll be memorizing all the lyrics to “I Have this Friend.” (You know, just in case Miranda finds a way to sneak it in.)
