After losing her mother to ovarian cancer, Kate Winslet helped save a complete stranger braving the same battle—with help from her pal Leonardo DiCaprio.
Winslet revealed on the British daytime TV show This Morning that she came across a GoFundMe page for a 28-year-old mother named Gemma Nuttall last year that resonated with her.
Nuttall was diagnosed with ovarian cancer during pregnancy but opted out of treatment for the safety of her then unborn baby. After giving birth she began treatment only to learn that she’d developed brain tumors, and the treatment she so desperately needed cost a whopping $98,000 per session.
Touched by Nuttall’s story, Winslet turned to friends to help raise about $280,000. Then she called her Titanic costar. “I phoned Leo and I said, ‘Do you think we could do a charity dinner or something?’ And he said, ‘Let’s go one better. Come with me to Saint-Tropez, to my big fund-raiser for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation,’ which is back in July, ‘and we will auction off a dinner with Jack and Rose,’” Winslet said.
Together, they raised $1.35 million to fund Nuttall’s treatment. Winslet and Nuttall used the remaining funds to start a foundation to help others with cancer and also donated to DiCaprio’s charity.
OK, we’re not crying. You’re crying.
