Kate Middleton Will Be Just Like Every Other Mom on Prince George’s First Day of School

It’s every child's right of passage and should be no different for four-year-old Prince George next week, when he sets off for his first day of school.

As any parent knows, your little one’s first day of school is a momentous occasion—and it can be a little bit scary, if not for the child, then certainly for the parents. And although Kate Middleton may have a chauffeur and a nanny on call (and who knows how many other people on staff), she won’t be relying on anyone else to take her little prince to school.

Instead, on Prince George’s first day at London’s Thomas’s Battersea (Thursday, September 7), Duchess Kate and Prince William will drop their son off at the school gates—just like any other parent. And if they’re really just like any other parents, they may then pull over to the closest available curb to have a cry.

This isn’t the first time that the royal couple have shown their desire to give their children a relatively normal upbringing. But this decision is especially sweet since it echoes the late Princess Diana.

Diana broke years of royal protocol when Prince William became the first heir to the throne to begin his schooling outside of the palace walls. Instead, the devoted mother sent her two boys to a “normal” preschool and dropped them both off on their first day too.

Now, it looks as though Kate and Will are following suit. And although Thomas’s Battersea is an exclusive $22,000-a-year prep school, it was actually a surprising choice to many. The school has a reputation for being unstuffy and has a big focus on teaching kindness and “learning to be givers, not takers.”

Here’s hoping that we, the people, are given some adorable images of Prince George with his school backpack on.
