Julia Roberts Transforms in Trailer for New Series ‘Gaslit’ About the Watergate Scandal

Julia Roberts has transformed for numerous roles over the years, playing real-life figures like American socialite Joanne Herring in Charlie Wilson's War or journalist and author Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat Pray Love.

Now, Roberts is taking on another historical part for an upcoming limited series from STARZ, titled Gaslit. The political thriller highlights a few of the lesser-known stories related to the Watergate scandal, and it is based on the first season of the podcast Slow Burn.

In Gaslit, Roberts portrays Martha Mitchell, the wife of Richard Nixon's Attorney General, John N. Mitchell, who was one of the first people to question Nixon's involvement in Watergate. For this role, the Pretty Woman actress has completely transformed, with a new blond hairstyle and an accent to match Mitchell's Arkansan roots. Check her out in the trailer below.

In the clip, we see the difficult journey that Roberts's character endures when she decides to reveal information that could incriminate her husband.

“Mrs. Mitchell, why risk your husband's position?” one jury member asks her at the end of the trailer. “Because it's the truth,” she replies.

Along with Roberts, Gaslit will feature other major stars, including Sean Penn, Dan Stevens, Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham, Darby Camp and Aleksandar Filimonović.

The series was created by Robbie Pickering, who has written for hit shows like Search Party and Mr. Robot. Meanwhile, Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic, 28 Hotel Rooms) acted as director, and Julia Roberts served as an executive producer for the series in addition to acting.

Gaslit will consist of 8 episodes, and the series will premiere on STARZ on April 24. Is that an Emmy we smell for Roberts? Only time will tell.
