Ever thought, “Man, I wish this ten-second Instagram story was really 15 minutes long…”? Yeah, us either, but Instagram seems to think so, because they just made a big announcement today.
The social-media company just launched IGTV, a new app very similar to YouTube in that it will feature longer-length videos (up to an hour long). The major difference? The videos will only be vertical in orientation, meaning they’re meant to be watched on your phone.
IGTV, which will be rolling out in the next 24 hours for Android and iOS users, can also be accessed via a separate tab within the original Instagram app. As soon as the tab or IGTV standalone app is opened, videos will begin to play automatically from accounts the user follows. The app is mostly meant for seasoned content creators and vloggers (YouTube’s bread and butter) and will eventually spawn new episodic series (think: TV shows) from celebs and influencers alike.
Over the long-term, the company plans to allow content creators on IGTV to post videos of “unlimited length,” as in you could watch Kylie Jenner apply makeup to herself for hours on end (oh, boy…this is starting to feel like a Black Mirror episode).
So, 200 minutes of hypnotizing colored-sand cutting? Maybe they’re on to something…
