Ina Garten and Martha Stewart may be the Taylor Swift and Katy Perry of the food world, but that doesn’t mean there’s bad blood between them. In fact, they’re two sautéed peas in a pod.

The Barefoot Contessa recently dished on her friendship with fellow domestic goddess Stewart in an interview for Michael Ian Black’s podcast, How to Be Amazing. Black asked Garten why she chose Stewart to write the foreword for her first book, The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, and the answer truly surprised us.

The Contessa revealed she and Stewart met in East Hampton, New York—where they both own homes—when the lifestyle doyen waltzed into Garten’s former specialty foods store. “My desk was right in front of the cheese case and we ended up in a conversation,” Garten recalled. She further shared that the two queens of cuisine struck a strong friendship after Garten catered several of Stewart's benefits. Snoop Dogg's bestie even encouraged Garten to get cracking on her first book and put her in touch with an editor.

Although the two ladies share a sweet-as-lemon-meringue-pie friendship, Garten didn't miss an opportunity to clarify what sets her apart from Stewart. “I think maybe what I do is I take one step back and make it a little simpler so it’s really doable,” she said. “Martha does love the gorgeous presentation, so if she’s making a pumpkin soup, she might carve out a pumpkin and serve it in the pumpkin, which is great,” the Barefoot Contessa: Cook Like a Pro host added. We see what you did there, Ina.

What’s better than a little healthy competition between friends? Oh, that’s right—Garten’s chocolate cassis cake.
