Warner Bros. has released the official title and first cast photo for the second chapter in the Fantastic Beasts series today, and it all points to one Voldemort-level face-off brewing.
The forthcoming film, titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, teases the legendary rivalry between friends turned foes, young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).
Voldemort may have been Dumbledore’s most notorious nemesis, but Grindelwald was his first white whale. The duo were once pals, but they had a disagreement when Gellert decided to turn to the dark side and was ultimately captured by the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA).
In The Crimes of Grindelwald, the dark wizard will escape prison and get to work gathering pure-blood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings, NBD. It will be up to Dumbledore and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to stop him.
You can even feel the tension between the great wizards in the cast photo—they’re positioned as far from each other as possible. Dumbledore does his best Burberry ad to the far left, while Grindelwald and the Elder Wand channel Evan Rachel Wood at the 2017 Emmys all the way to the right.
Prepare for the beginnings of a great wizarding rivalry when Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald apparates into theaters exactly a year from today, November 16, 2018.
