Everything You Need to Know About the ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Sequels (Yes, *Plural*)
If you fell in love with the opulent world of Crazy Rich Asians (and LBH, Henry Golding), then gird your fabulous loins—not one but two sequels are on their way. From the plot to the release dates, here’s everything you need to know about the follow-up films to one of biggest blockbusters of 2018.
The Cast
All of the major players are returning—bless—so we can expect to see Henry Golding (Nick Young), Constance Wu (Rachel Chu), Michelle Yeoh (Eleanor Young), Gemma Chan (Astrid Young Teo), Awkwafina (Peik Lin Go) and the rest of the gang reprise their roles. Director Jon Chu and writers Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim will be at the helm, just like with the OG Crazy Rich Asians.
The Plot
Like the first film in the series, both new movies are based on author Kevin Kwan’s best-selling books. In the sequel, China Rich Girlfriend, Rachel tracks down her birth father (remember, he’s not actually dead) and gets a huge surprise when she finally learns who he is. In the third story, Rich People Problems, Nick’s grandmother falls ill and passes away, leading the Young family to turn against one another in hopes of inheriting the estate. Like Crazy Rich Asians, both sequels are sure to be jam-packed with couture, drama and sweet escapism.
The Arrival Date
Sadly, filming of both movies won’t begin until 2020 because of director Chu’s previous work commitments. (Rude.) On the plus side, both blockbusters will be shot back-to-back, so there won’t be as long of a wait time in between. China Rich Girlfriend will probably arrive in 2021, with Rich People Problems dropping the following year.
*Breathes sigh of relief*
