Chris Sullivan is standing up to critics and defending the fact that he wears a fat suit and prosthetic jowls to portray his character, Toby, on NBC’s This Is Us.
On Tuesday, October 24, Sullivan appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and discussed the controversy surrounding the prosthetics he wears on the show. He said, “I think that the show is just too good; they had to find something wrong with it. We currently live in a culture where outrage is a bit of a hobby for some people. If they’re not outraged about something, they’re totally bored.”
We first learned of Sullivan’s on-screen additions in February of this year when the show’s official Twitter account shared a shocking photo of the actor posing with his This Is Us costar, Chrissy Metz. However, Sullivan went on to reveal that the extra weight was never meant to stir the pot. Instead, it’s supposed to help viewers distinguish between different times in Toby’s life. He continued, “It’s a tool. It’s a costume that I put on. Logistically speaking, it allows me to travel back and forth through time when Toby was not as heavy as he is now.”
Despite the critics, Sullivan said his focus is on his character and delivering the best performance he possibly can. He added, “But I think that regardless of the costumes that I wear, especially with Toby, I try to bring as much heart and honesty as I can.”
Be sure to tune in to NBC on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET for a chance to see Sullivan’s This Is Us jowls in action.
