He first made us ugly cry in The Fault in Our Stars, and now Ansel Elgort is back to further inflict emotional wreckage as the lead role in the film adaptation of The Goldfinch.
Elgort will portray Theodore Decker, a young man whose life is forever changed when a terrorist bombing kills his mother during a seemingly innocuous visit to the museum. In the post-bombing chaos, Theodore absconds with a small Dutch Golden Age painting called “The Goldfinch.” The pilfered artwork serves as a beacon of hope as his life is uprooted to Las Vegas, where he’s forced to reside with his deadbeat father and he’s ultimately seduced by a life of crime and art forgery.
John Crowley (Brooklyn) will serve as director for the retelling of Donna Tartt’s Dickensian Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. No further casting announcements have been made, and filming is expected to commence in early 2018.
If Ansel Elgort is a stolen bird, then we’re a stolen bird.
