Princess Diana Almost Starred in ‘The Bodyguard’ Sequel & What?!

We all know Princess Diana for her social impact, poise and long-held “fun royal’ status. But did you also know the late Princess of Wales nearly added “actress” to her résumé? Yep.

Kevin Costner recently revealed that Princess Diana was attached to star in the sequel to his 1992 hit The Bodyguard and—get this—Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson was the one who convinced her.

As Costner, 64, told People, the role Princess Diana was supposed to play was similar to the one Whitney Houston portrayed in the original film. But the late princess and Costner would never have come together if it wasn’t for good ol’ Fergie.

“Sarah was really important. I always respect Sarah because she’s the one that set up the conversation between me and Diana,” Costner said. “She was the one that set it up, and she never said, ‘Well, what about me? I’m a princess, too.’ She was just so supportive of the idea.”

He went on to explain that Princess Diana was still a bit nervous about one specific aspect of the movie.

“I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question, she goes, ‘Are we going to have like a kissing scene?’ She said it in a very respectful way,” Costner remembered. “She was nervous because her life was very governed. And I said, ‘Yeah, there’s going to be a little bit of that, but we can make that okay, too.’”

Costner first spilled the tea about Princess Diana’s involvement in the sequel during a 2012 interview with Anderson Cooper on Anderson Live. He explained that the plot revolved around his Bodyguard character, Frank Farmer, who would be protecting Diana’s character from paparazzi and stalkers. Ultimately, their relationship would turn romantic.

By chance, Costner received the script for the sequel just a day before Princess Diana’s tragic death.

The princess would have turned 58 years old today. We miss you, Lady Di.
