Last week, Kate Middleton hosted her fifth annual “Together at Christmas” concert at Westminster Abbey, a festive and holiday-focused occasion with a regal aim of putting guests, performers and other members of the royal family—Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis included—in the royal spirit. How to do it? Well, a celebratory program filled with celebrity readings and Christmas tunes that echo throughout the abbey certainly helps. But if I’ve learned anything from Catherine’s appearances over the years, there’s another all-but-required sartorial detail: A Christmas coat.

Evergreen, red, anything goes!

It’s the first thing you notice when the Princess of Wales arrives—her evergreen-hued (and fur-trimmed) Catherine Walker coat. The nearly ankle-length design is timeless and chic. Add a black boot, a sparkly earring and the coat is elegant all on its own.
It’s also on-theme. Much like the concert itself, Catherine’s Christmas coat is festive-feeling and bright. A single glance anchors every image from the occasion in the holiday season, which is absolutely the point. (If you look back at the Princess of Wales coats from years past, her festive color palette—a mix of reds and whites, even burgundy—has remained consistent and holiday-centric.)
So that begs the question: Do you need a Christmas coat, too? I’ll admit that a few years back, I invested in a holiday red style from Sentaler and I’ve never looked back. Even better, there’s still plenty of time to shop. Here, our favorite picks to snag before the season runs out.
1. Ann Taylor Plaid Fitted Double Breasted Coat
Ann Taylor
It’s not the same as Princess Catherine’s, but in a tartan green, it still feels on brand for the season.
2. Marcella Charlton Coat
Marcella New York
You can’t get much more “Christmas coat” than this.
3. Quince Classic Coat
Quince
Now this is a style that is definitely giving Princess Catherine.
