Kerry Washington Has Been Dressing Up as Famous Women for Black History Month on Instagram

While we're used to Kerry Washington modeling her runway-ready ’fits on Instagram and giving us behind-the-scenes peeks at her latest Hollywood projects, the 45-year-old actress has been using her account in a totally new way this February.

In honor of Black History Month, the Scandal actress has been dressing up like famous Black women throughout history, while also offering background behind their achievements in her captions.

The project started earlier this month, when Washington made a post that said, “Black History is about more than just slavery and Jim Crow. Our history is a tapestry of beauty, culture, power, community, resilience, & strength. And through it all—the pain and the joy—Black women have held it down! So this #BlackHistoryMonth I want to celebrate and honor Black HERstory and embody my sisters who have paved the way for putting magic into the world.”

To kick off the campaign, Washington started with famous model Beverly Johnson. In her caption, the actress said, “First up, is model, actress, singer, advocate, business woman and all around goddess—Beverly Johnson. She was the first Black woman to be on the cover of Vogue Magazine in 1974 (swipe to see!). She showed little Black girls, the fashion industry, and the WORLD that Black is beautiful and powerful. Forever grateful to Ms. Beverly and to all of the Black models of this era that changed the game.”
