Is Kate Middleton Responsible for This Season’s Hottest Color?
There’s no denying Kate Middleton is a fashion icon. There’s a study about it for Pete’s sake. And while she’s been known to set trends, her most recent au-courant contribution was truly forward thinking.
It was January 30 in Stockholm, Sweden, when the 36-year-old royal mom arrived at the home of the British Ambassador to Sweden wearing a deep yellow gold floral Erdem dress.
It was off-brand for the Duchess of Cambridge, who normally sticks to rich blues and prints of the tartan or polka-dot variety. But that’s not all: It appears that K-Middy was wearing the color of fall way before fall trends had even crossed our mind.
It didn’t take long for stars of a sartorial mindset to catch on. Other celebs started copying Kate in late spring, and by the first sign of autumn, yellow was everywhere.
Amal Clooney Pays Tribute
An early adopter, Amal Clooney paid homage to the Duchess of Cambridge’s style and wore a marigold yellow Diane Von Furstenberg day dress to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding on May 19—with a matching fascinator, mind you.
Anna Wintour Gives Her Nod of Approval
Then, matriarch of fashion Anna Wintour sealed the deal and opted for a floral yellow Prada number at the 72nd Annual Tony Awards on June 10.
And just like that, it was fall and yellow was all over the red carpet.
Claire Foy Brings It Full Circle
Claire Foy, who played Middleton’s grandmother-in-law Queen Elizabeth in The Crown, stepped out in marigold Oscar de la Renta at the First Man premiere on October 4. (Oh, and Ryan Gosling color coordinated with her.)
Taylor Schilling Proclaims *Yellow* Is the New Black
Then, Orange Is the New Black’s Taylor Schilling hit the AFI Film Festival in the sunny hue on November 10.
Katherine Waterston Bumps It into the Zeitgeist
Fantastic Beasts and the Crimes of Grindelwald star Katherine Waterston used the color to debut her baby bump on November 13.
Susan Kelechi Watson Welcomes the Trend to Network TV
Finally, This Is Us favorite Susan Kelechi Watson sported a vibrant yellow frock at the NBC/Vanity Fair party on November 15, essentially taking the trend from K-Middy all the way to American network TV.
There you have it: Kate Middleton’s fashion influence knows no bounds.
