From chopping off his shaggy strawberry locks to training for a marathon, Chip Gaines loves a good surprise. His latest “Chip-rise,” however, really takes the cake.

In the promo for the final Fixer Upper episode (tear), the renovation guru reveals the special meaning behind the name of his and Joanna’s Magnolia business empire

Chip took a moment out of his busy day fixing up homes, running a restaurant and driving his wife crazy to tell his kids Drake (12), Ella (11), Duke (9) and Emmie Kay (7) about the special night that gave him and Joanna the idea for their business name. (Baby number five was too busy in utero to listen up.)

“You know what’s interesting about a magnolia tree?” he asks the Gaines children. “One of mama and I’s first dates, I climbed up in a magnolia tree and pulled her off a magnolia bloom and gave it to her.” Um, swoon

Now, the magnolia moniker is present in their home renovation business, their Target line, their Magnolia Market location in Waco, Texas, and their magazine, Magnolia Journal. Now that, like their almost 15-year marriage, is commitment.

Chip continued, “We love magnolia trees. It really embodies our company. It’s basically become our mascot. So every project we do, we love to plant a magnolia gem.”

The final Fixer Upper episode airs tomorrow, Tuesday, April 3, at 6 p.m. PT/ 9 p.m. ET on HGTV and we’re bracing for the heartbreak. It’s truly the end of a shiplap era.
