*This* Is How Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Spent Their First Anniversary (Hint: There Were Zebras)
Remember when the couple embarked on a three-week trip to Botswana in August 2017 and royal aficionados waited with bated breath for news of their engagement? Welp, now we finally have some details on the romantic vacation the prince and his bride-to-be took just three weeks before they became engaged.
According to Katie Nicholl, author of the new book Harry: Life, Loss, and Love, the couple celebrated in a $910-a-night tented suite in Meno A Kwena. The romantic accommodations have “carved wooden king-size bed and open-air shower,” as well as a slew of other luxe amenities.
Nicholl added, “They slept under the stars and enjoyed their meals alfresco. From their veranda they could see zebras cooling themselves in the nearby watering hole and other wild animals at close quarters…The couple spent an afternoon enjoying lunch before walking hand in hand to a prime spot overlooking the river, where they watched pied kingfishers swooping over the water and tried to spot the spectacular African fish eagle.” How outdoorsy of you, Meghan.
If sleeping under the stars in Botswana sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because Harry revealed that the couple also spent their third date this way. In their first on-camera interview as an engaged couple, Harry said, “We camped out with each other, under the stars...Then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to get to know each other.”
Both vacations played such a vital role in the couple’s courtship that Markle’s engagement ring even features a Botswanan diamond.
We wonder if their honeymoon will also include an audience of zebras. Just a hunch.
