You shelled out for an eggplant-colored chiffon column dress, ten bottles of prosecco and a suite at the swankiest hotel in the bride-to-be’shometown. Oof. If you’ve ever been in a wedding party, you can relate to the agony of spending a giant chunk of hard-earned savings on someone else’s “I do’s.” (We still love you, future Mrs. Jennings.) And according to a survey from Bankrate, your qualms are justified.

The survey of more than 2,200 U.S. adults found that members of the bridal party spend about $728 on average, and whopping $1,070 if you’re in the Northeast. (Tell your BFF she may want to rethink that NYC destination wedding, yeah?) Guests also spend a hefty amount on travel, accommodations, outfits and gifts, with close friends and family spending nearly $630 just to attend. Barely know the happy couple? You’ll still probably cough up about $370 to make an appearance.

All this to say that maybe we should all be renting our bridesmaid dresses (or at the very least, avoiding eggplant at all costs).
