If you’re across the pond and find yourself in a McDonald’s (it’s really inevitable), you might notice one little change.
The fast-food chain is doing away with plastic straws in its 1,300 U.K. locations. Beginning in May, you’ll see paper straws instead.
That’s because plastic straws are a major source of pollution, even though they’re recyclable. Most customers throw them into the trash, and then they end up in the ocean. (Not cool.) This small change is part of the company’s larger effort to make all packaging completely recyclable by 2025.
Here’s hoping the paper straws catch on and plastic will be phased out all over the world. We (and the whales) thank you, Mickey D’s.
