Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ Will Be Ending After Season 5—But There Might Be a Spinoff

Get ready to say goodbye to Hawkins (and the Upside Down).

The Duffer Brothers just announced that the fifth season of Stranger Things will be the show’s last. In an open letter to fans, Matt and Ross Duffer explained their reason behind the decision and later posted it to the internet.

“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things,” the creators shared on Thursday. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four or five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but—as you'll soon see for yourselves—we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; Season 5 will be the last.”

This news comes after the streaming service announced the official premiere date for the new season. The fourth season will be released in two parts, with volume one debuting on May 27 and volume two dropping July 1.

“With nine scripts, over eight hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one,” the Duffers wrote, adding that they “can’t wait” to share it with everyone.

While the Duffer Brothers remained tight-lipped about the plot for seasons four and five, they did tease the possibility of a spinoff series in the future. “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes,” they wrote.

Stranger Things centers around a group of friends that encounter supernatural forces in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. The Netflix series became a massive hit amongst viewers, becoming one of the biggest shows ever on the platform. The show’s success created breakout stars out of Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp and Caleb McLaughlin.

But, we’re not ready to say goodbye to Stranger Things just yet…
