Tom Cruise Returns as Maverick in New ‘Top Gun’ Sequel Trailer

Calling all Top Gun fans! Maverick and Iceman are re-teaming up for another edge-of-your-seat adventure.

Paramount Pictures just dropped a brand-new trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, which takes place 30 years after the events in the first film.

The trailer re-introduces viewers to Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer), who are no longer pilot trainees. When Maverick gets promoted to an instructor role, he soon realizes that Iceman has set high expectations.

“[Iceman] seems to think that you have something left to offer the Navy. What that is, I can’t imagine,” Cyclone (Jon Hamm) says in the clip. To which Maverick responds, “I’m not a teacher. Just want to manage expectations.”

The rest of the trailer features a montage of action scenes teasing what’s to come. While it’s hard to pinpoint any specific story lines, one thing’s for sure: Maverick’s past is returning to haunt him.

This is likely due to Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller). Not only is he the son of Maverick’s late best friend, Goose (played by Anthony Edwards), but he also thinks Maverick is responsible for his dad’s death.

Other cast members include Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Thomasin McKenzie, Jean Louisa Kelly, Lewis Pullman and Manny Jacinto.

Although Top Gun: Maverick will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, it won’t hit theaters until May 27.
