September 2026, like Virgo itself, is a month about adaptation. The month is about understanding and integrating the personal implications of August’s eclipses, while orienting toward the Venus retrograde cycle that will define the upcoming season.
August ends hot. The final day sees Venus entering the pre-shadow of her retrograde, while Saturn and Jupiter harmonize from their respective fire signs. September 1st sees the completion of the Saturn-Mars standoff that characterized the final week of August. These three alignments play off each other to mark the transition from one month into another.
Mars and Saturn engage in an intense challenge between effort and circumstance. Mars is our ability to take action and force our will, whereas Saturn is the resistance of the world to those efforts by oppression, institution and tradition. September begins with many people at war with the way things are, personally and collectively. This has been building since Mars entered Cancer on August 11th.
Venus’s entrance into the pre-shadow of her retrograde is a defining characteristic of September. The ‘pre-shadow’ is the first pass over the degrees that will be revisited during the retrograde and introduces the themes and topics of that specific retrograde period. Venus will be in the pre-shadow from August 31st until the retrograde station on October 3rd. Because her retrograde will visit both Scorpio and Libra, more potent themes of the retrograde arise when Venus enters Scorpio on the 10th. The most salient moment of the pre-shadow will be when she encounters Pluto on the 15th, because it will be the first of three such encounters during the retrograde cycle (the other two occur on October 19 and December 9). Venus-Pluto in contentious conflict can make relationships extremely triggering, activating attachment trauma and prompting ultimatums and extreme reactions. This becomes even more volatile as Venus battles ambivalence and stress-tests relationships of all sorts while it’s retrograde.
