The One Thing You Should Do to Your Mattress Once a Month
And it’s not flipping it over
Sleep, beautiful sleep—it’s the holy grail at the end of a long day. Too bad your mattress is a haven for dust mites, which cause allergies and can prevent you from getting the blissful slumber you need. Here, a solution that takes all of five minutes.
What you need: Your vacuum, plus its upholstery attachment and crevice tool.
What you do: Once a month—say, while you’re already in the midst of vacuuming the rest of your house—strip the bed and run your vacuum’s upholstery tool over your mattress and box spring, pressing firmly into the surface. Next, use the crevice tool to go over the edges and any quilted parts. Done and done.
Why this helps: Dust mites are gross little microscopic creatures that love nothing more than warm environments like your bedding. (Ew.) Besides regularly washing your sheets, vacuuming is your best defense against them—and can significantly reduce allergy symptoms. Sweet dreams.
