Best Washable Couches 2026
Original images by Rachel Bowie and Sydney Meister

Let’s be honest: The phrase “washable couch” isn’t going to elicit swoons. But if you’ve ever had a toddler smear peanut butter into a linen slipcover or watched your cat cough up a hairball in slow motion onto your $4,000 sectional, you know washability is the new luxury.

In its simplest form, a washable couch is one with removable cushion covers you can toss in the laundry—or at the very least, a fabric so stain-repellent and durable that you don’t need to panic-clean every time someone drinks red wine near the armrest. It’s the kind of sofa that’s *designed* to handle wine spills, cat vomit, Magic Marker art and the daily grime of sweatpants lounging. Reddit threads are overflowing with people looking for something durable enough to survive kids and pets—but still stylish enough to feel like a grown-up piece of furniture.

I spent months culling the best options on the market—sectionals, sofas and loveseats that combine performance-grade fabrics with top-tier comfort and thoughtful design—and now, one year later, I revisited our top picks to ensure they still hold up.

What gets our seal of approval? Below, find five editor-vetted options—including the viral Lovesac Sactional and 7th Avenue sofa—to find the best washable couch for your home.

How We Tested the Best Washable Couches

Every couch on this list was put through what I like to call the three C’s: Cleanability, Comfort and Configuration. First, let’s talk cleanability—because not every sofa here has removable, toss-in-the-laundry covers (though some do, like 7th Avenue and Lovesac). For the others, I looked for performance-grade fabrics engineered to be so resistant to stains, odors and pet hair, you’ll never need to unzip a cushion. That includes micro-chenille, recycled polyester weaves and tightly woven poly-blends that repel liquid and wipe clean with nothing more than a damp cloth and a drop of detergent. (Crate & Barrel’s Tidal sectional survived a Hanukkah party wine spill and muddy Sheepadoodle paws with zero arm work.)

And because no one wants a couch that cleans easily but feels like a futon, I made sure every pick was actually comfortable—meaning deep seat depths, supportive cushions, and enough room to sprawl out and rewatch Grey's Anatomy in a criss-cross-applesauce pose. Lastly, I looked at configuration: modularity, build quality, and how easy it was to assemble or rearrange without breaking a sweat.

Best Sofa Overall

1. 7th Avenue Modular Sectional Sofa

What We Like

  • Fully machine-washable—including inserts
  • 14 durable, stain-repellent fabrics in multiple color options
  • Reconfigurable modular design
  • Adjustable cushion firmness and storage options

What We Don't Like

  • No dryer use (air dry only)
  • Cushions may take some time to soften

7th avenue

First on our list is a fully washable, first-of-its-kind sofa (that feels as good as it looks). Every 7th Avenue cover is removable, water-repellent and stain-resistant, with a specialized coating technology that helps repel liquids without compromising softness. Depending on your aesthetic, you can choose from three machine-washable fabric types: Performance Textured Weave (a structured linen-like option in natural white, grey beige and charcoal black), Performance Woven Chenille (a cozy mid-pile texture in taupe, light grey or charcoal) or Premium Performance Velvet (available in deep, luxe shades like navy, olive and espresso). When it comes time to clean, simply unzip the covers, toss them in the washing machine on delicate and air dry.

But washability isn’t the only feature that sets this one apart. Each piece is built to order with a choice of Classic (39-inch) or Extra-Deep (47-inch) seating, adjustable back-cushion firmness (with complimentary fill packets included), and optional under-seat storage for $200 per module. The comfort factor is in the cushion tech: multi-layered seat foam—blending plush memory foam with ultra-resilient core layers—offers bounce without sag, and down-alternative fill gives the same sink-in experience as feather-filled seats, without allergens or fluffing. "The cushions are soft but dense,” says PureWow reviewer Rebecca Kroll. "[I] was surprised how fancy and substantial they feel. [It’s] not a lightweight foam."

At $6,210 for the six-seat sofa, this is an investment piece—but it's also designed to last (expect a 10-year lifespan, per the brand) and evolve with your lifestyle, since you can reconfigure the couch's layout. That's what drew Kroll to the brand in the first place: “We have it set up in a four-by-two configuration in the family room, but knowing we can make it a more typical three-by-three square, which can fit in more normal-shaped rooms in the future, made it feel like we were buying something for [the] long term and flexibility; not only what fits this room, this house, today,” she explains. So yes, it’s splurgy—but for a customizable, washable, guest-worthy sofa? It earns its spot.

Most Splurge-Worthy Sofa

2. Lovesac Stealth Tech Sofa

What We Like

  • Covers are removable and machine-washable
  • 150+ durable, high-performance fabric options
  • Spills and pet messes are easy to clean thanks to removable parts
  • Surround sound and wireless charging is built directly into the sofa arms

What We Don't Like

  • Heavy components make reconfiguring difficult
  • Some fabrics (like leather and select velvets) are not machine-washable
  • Customization and add-ons can get pricey quickly

Lovesac

While the Lovesac Sactional is undeniably a splurge, it’s a smart investment if you’re looking for a sofa that’s built to last decades—and survive whatever life (or pets) throw at it. The fully modular design means every seat, side and cover is removable, and most upholstery options (excluding leather and select velvets) are machine-washable. The brand’s washable covers are primarily made from high-durability synthetics—like polyester chenille and velvet or polyester-rayon blends—that resist shrinking, fading and pilling in the wash. Some, like the Corded Velvet, even feature a water-repellent finish to help prevent spills from soaking in. And because each piece is sold separately, you can replace a single cover or cushion without reupholstering the whole thing.

As PureWow contributor Olivia Dubyak confirms in her review, “all cushion covers are washable,” which came in handy when she and her husband turned their setup into a full-on crash pad: “In fact, one of my fave configurations is when I put the seats in the center to shape it like a big mattress,” she writes. “My hubby and I have had high school-esque sleepovers out there plenty of times.”

Beyond its washability and modularity, however, the Sactional also features cutting-edge tech that sets it apart from every other sofa on this list. Dubyak tested the StealthTech upgrade, which includes Harman Kardon surround sound and wireless charging built directly into the arms of the couch. “I’m still baffled by how high-quality the sound is and how much the subwoofer amplifies the bass,” she explains.

While she admits it’s “not a walk in the park to reconfigure,” she also notes that “you can do almost any configuration,” from a giant U-shape to two separate seating areas. Taken together, its built-in audio, replaceable parts, and machine-washable fabrics make the Lovesac Sactional one of the most high-tech—and low-stress—sofas money can buy.

3. Crate & Barrel Tidal Sofa

What We Like

  • 150+ performance fabric options (stain-, pet- and odor-resistant)
  • Soft, tightly woven yarns are easy to spot-clean
  • Multiple configurations with customizable arrangements
  • White glove delivery included

What We Don't Like

  • Cushion covers are not removable
  • Fabric softness varies by weave (micro-chenille = softer)

Crate & Barrel

Let’s get one thing out of the way: No, the cushion covers aren’t removable here—but that didn’t stop me from awarding this sectional 96 points out of 100 in my PureWow100 review. Why? Because the fabric is engineered to be so spot-clean friendly, you won’t need to remove the covers. More than 150 of the 229 upholstery options fall into the performance-grade category, including micro-chenilles, textured weaves, and Seaqual-certified recycled poly blends that repel spills and resist stains. (Think: Winward Snow, a bleach-cleanable linen weave; Belden Vanilla, a low-pile boucle that doesn’t trap hair; and Hansel Lagoon, a soft poly-cotton blend that spot cleans beautifully.) The fabric library was intentionally designed resistant to stains, spills and wear—thanks to tightly woven yarns—which repel dirt, liquids and even odors. This was clear after months of testing the Oasis Sand chenille, which wiped clean in minutes after both a wine spill and a muddy Sheepadoodle encounter. In fact, it was a major upgrade compared to a bouclé loveseat I tested prior. That loveseat’s high-pile fabric trapped lint, hair and denim stains like a magnet. In contrast, the micro-chenille weave of this sectional has been a dream.

To that end, while you won’t be tossing the covers in the wash, a damp cloth and drop of detergent are often all you need. As mentioned before, my dog’s dirty paw prints and a Hanukkah party wine spill were no match—both cleaned up in minutes with a warm damp cloth and a drop of laundry detergent (life hack). Over the past year, the fabric has not only held up, but it’s stayed looking fresh. And while the Tidal’s cushions start off firm, they soften with time—now, they offer the perfect balance of support and give. Add to that a feather-down back fill and six modular configurations, and you’ve got a stain-resistant sofa that doesn’t sacrifice aesthetics for practicality—just ask my mom, a veteran interior designer, who gave it her official seal of approval.

Fast Facts

  • Fabric Options: 150+ performance-grade fabrics, including micro-chenille, textured weave, velvet, bouclé, canvas, linen weave
  • Configurations: Sofa, chaise, L-shaped sectional, custom modular builds
  • Shipping and Delivery: White glove delivery with expert assembly

Most Comfortable Sofa

4. Joybird Holt Sectional

What We Like

  • Over 75 fabric and color options
  • Tiered fabric system makes it easy to choose based on durability and look
  • Spot-cleanable chenille holds up well to spills
  • Deep seat (28 inches)

What We Don't Like

  • Cushions aren’t removable and may slide forward with use
  • Some pilling and cushion sagging after daily wear
  • Chaise disconnects from frame and needs occasional readjusting

Joybird

This is another sofa where the cushion covers aren’t removable—but that doesn’t mean it’s hard to clean. In another PureWow100 review, Dubyak spot-tested everything from pizza sauce to pen marks and reported: “I am very pleased with how easily I’ve been able to lift any stains off the material. She chose the Merit Dove chenille, one of Joybird’s 76 upholstery options, which range from Tier 1 to Tier 4 fabrics. The Tier 1 options are the most affordable, basic, and ship the fastest, making them ideal for anyone who wants a stylish sofa, stat. While they don’t include luxe finishes like stain-guard coatings, they’re still polyester-heavy blends that are relatively easy to spot clean—perfect for families, pet owners, or messy eaters. That said, Dubyak did note that after six months' use, the fabric started to pill in high-friction areas, though a fabric shaver easily remedied the issue.

Where the Holt really shines, though, is in its comfort and customization. “I’ve owned quite a few couches over the years, and the Joybird Holt Sectional comes in first place for comfort,” Dubyak says. The 28-inch-deep seats are “squishy yet firm,” with enough width to pass her all-important criss-cross-applesauce test.

Plus, Joybird’s website lets you filter by color, fabric durability, sustainability, and pet-friendliness, with tiered options from basic to bouclé. Dubyak went with a left-facing chaise in chenille, noting that while it does separate from the main frame a bit too easily, “it’s super cozy to sleep or relax on,” and the minimalist design adds a luxe, high-quality look to her space.

Bottom line: Even if you can’t toss the cushions in the wash, the Holt’s spot-cleanable, snuggle-friendly construction makes it an ideal pick for stylish loungers.

Fast Facts

  • Fabric Options: Polyester, chenille, velvet, bouclé, cotton blends; Tier 1 includes budget-friendly synthetics
  • Configurations: Modular chaise sectional (left or right), over 75 fabric and color combinations
  • Shipping & Delivery: White glove delivery; slight delays possible depending on local courier availability

Best Kid-Friendly Sofa

5. Raymour & Flanigan Artemis II Sectional Sofa

What We Like

  • Microfiber upholstery is dense and liquid-resistant
  • Most spills are wipeable with just water and a paper towel
  • Cushions offer a supportive, springy feel with 24-inch seat depth
  • Sections stay securely connected

What We Don't Like

  • Cushion covers are not removable or machine-washable
  • Color and fabric choices are more limited compared to high-end brands

Raymour & Flanigan

The Artemis II sectional is the ultimate playroom couch, and it all comes down to the microfiber upholstery. Engineered with ultra-fine polyester threads packed into a dense weave, the fabric is soft to the touch but structured enough to resist spills, pilling and pet hair. Liquids bead up on the surface instead of soaking in, and crumbs don’t wedge themselves deep into the fibers. Even better? The non-porous weave doesn’t trap allergens or odors the way looser cotton or linen blends can. “This is our second microfiber couch from Raymour & Flanigan—the first one lasted 10 years,” PureWow senior director of special projects Rachel Bowie explains. Cleaning messes is refreshingly simple, too: “We use just a paper towel and water in most cases,” she adds.

Comfort-wise, the nearly 24-inch seat depth and Dacron-wrapped foam cushions make it springy but supportive. Another standout? The L-shaped loveseat, which you can customize to be left- or right-facing to suit your space. But for Bowie, the real selling point is the support: “It’s the seat depth—nearly 24 inches—that really makes this sofa sing,” she says. “You’ll sink into the seat whether you’re stretching out on the loveseat or sitting up straight.”

And while many modular sectionals tend to shift—especially in high-traffic homes—this one stays put. Thanks to metal U-clamp connectors, the sections won’t drift apart (even when your 6-year-old decides the couch is a trampoline). “The couch doesn’t separate or shift, no matter who jumps on it,” Bowie confirms. In short, “It’s a workhorse of a couch that’s perfect for families.”

Fast Facts

  • Fabric Options: 20 microfiber polyester options; engineered to resist spills, pilling and pet hair
  • Configurations: L-shaped sectional with reversible loveseat (left- or right-facing)
  • Shipping & Delivery: Free white glove delivery, typically within 3 days

What Is the Best Washable Couch?

If you’re looking for a couch that can handle real messes without looking like it belongs in a dorm room, these five editor-tested picks stand out. The 7th Avenue Modular Sofa is the gold standard for true washability—every cover (including the inserts) is fully removable and machine-washable, offered in luxe, stain-repellent fabrics like velvet, chenille and a linen-style weave. It’s also ridiculously customizable, from seat depth to cushion firmness and even hidden storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there *truly* such a thing as a washable couch?

The short answer is yes. A washable couch is either 1) fully equipped with removable, machine-washable cushion covers (like 7th Avenue or Lovesac), or 2) wrapped in performance fabrics designed to resist stains, repel moisture and clean up easily without needing to be removed. The former is ideal if you want to literally throw your mess in the wash. The latter works best if you’d rather not unzip your life apart every time there’s a spill. According to the American Cleaning Institute, synthetic fibers—like polyester and olefin—are naturally hydrophobic, meaning they repel water and dry faster, making them ideal for stain resistance and spot-cleaning in high-traffic upholstery.

What is the best material for a washable couch?

When it comes to washability, polyester-based fabrics are the MVPs. They’re strong, less absorbent than natural fibers, and can hold up to repeated laundering without pilling, shrinking or stretching. Brands often use polyester blends with rayon, nylon, or acrylic to soften the feel and improve durability. Performance velvet, poly-chenille, and coated weaves (like Crypton or LiveSmart) are also top contenders because they’re engineered with protective barriers that resist stains and bacteria. Natural fibers like cotton and linen may feel luxe, but they absorb liquids and stain more easily—unless they’ve been chemically treated.

What is the most stain-resistant couch fabric?

Technically speaking, olefin (aka polypropylene) is the most stain-resistant fiber out there—it’s solution-dyed, meaning the color and chemical resistance are baked in before the threads are even spun. That makes it impervious to most water-based spills, and it won’t bleach or fade easily. That said, it’s not the coziest. For something softer, polyester chenille or velvet blends with a performance finish are ideal. These fabrics have a tighter weave and are often coated with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish that causes liquids to bead on the surface.

Is a Lovesac couch worth it?

If you’re someone who rearranges your living room like it’s a Sims build, yes. The Lovesac Sactional is fully modular, endlessly customizable and almost entirely machine washable. Most of its 150+ fabric options—like polyester chenille, velvet and linen-style blends—are made with high-tenacity synthetic fibers that resist pilling, fading and shrinking in the wash. Plus, you can replace individual covers or cushions instead of reupholstering the entire sofa when life (or your cat) inevitably happens. Add in the StealthTech upgrade (built-in surround sound and wireless charging) and it’s not just a couch—it’s a lifestyle investment. Expensive? Definitely. Worth it if you never want to buy another sofa again? For many, yes.
