A mattress is a big investment—not just in terms of your budget, but also in terms of your health and overall wellness. After all, sleep is the most important part of everyone’s day, and if your bed isn’t supporting you in all the right ways, you’ll be missing out on vital rest and recovery. Thankfully, you’ve got plenty of options when it comes to nailing down your next mattress, starting with two of the most popular picks on the market: the Saatva Classic (from $1,399; $1,099) and Helix Midnight Luxe (from $1,685; $1,264).

Both hybrid designs combine innerspring coils and soft memory foam, and they’re both hailed by reviewers for offering universal comfort for a range of physical needs, sleeper types and preferences. But which one is best (for you, at least)? Two PureWow staffers put them to the snooze test for months to find out.

The PureWow100 is a scale our editors use to vet new products and services, so you know what's worth the spend—and what's total hype. Learn more about our process here.

Senior Editor Dana Dickey made the switch to a Saatva Classic and hasn’t looked back. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve increasingly depended on a good mattress to really align and support my body to not only ease from a day of tensed shoulders and tech neck, but also to recover from physical exhaustion from taxing workouts.”

After previously sleeping on full-memory-foam beds (which she liked, but found too hot), she was pleasantly surprised by the Saatva’s “perfect combo platter of comfortable and body-supporting elements,” along with the breathable Euro pillow top, made with organic cotton, that keeps her cool.

“The entire layer-cake of its construction is engineered to provide support where your back needs it most—the top is extra-quilted in the lumbar region, and there are additional lumbar supports made of wire and high-density memory foam,” Dickey explains. “The mattress has two additional layers [of] coils in two different steel densities to keep you supported and floating on the mattress, not slurped down into it.”

Saatva

While Dickey opted for a Classic on the firmer side, shoppers can choose between Plush Soft, Luxury Firm and Firm options based on their preference (and if they’re not sure, can even take Saatva’s comfort quiz).

The bed is Greenguard Gold Certified and constructed of eco-conscious materials, including CertiPUR-US foams that are certified to meet rigorous emissions, content and durability standards, as well as a natural thistle-pulp flame retardant made without fiberglass and recycled steel coils. Saatva’s mattresses are also coated in a botanical antimicrobial treatment that inhibits the growth of bacteria and mold.

Dickey’s final word: “Since my first night on my Saatva, I’ve noticed I regularly dream more, which leads me to believe I’m sinking faster and longer into what neuroscience says is the recuperative REM dream state…I wake up feeling more refreshed, and frankly, I drift off to sleep faster, since I’m not tossing and turning to feel comfortable.”

Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay put her Helix Midnight Luxe through two of the most challenging sleep trials over the past year: pregnancy and postpartum. “As your belly grows, so does your inability to find a comfortable position—no matter how many pregnancy pillows you panic-order from Amazon. Post-baby, things get even more challenging. The cooling sheets and lightweight comforter you used to swear by are no match for postpartum night sweats,” she explains.

While she was initially apprehensive about the mattress’s degree of plushness (having usually preferred firmer beds), new mom Yohay was ultimately won over by the Midnight Luxe and its layers of cradling foam and supportive coils. “Though I’m convinced ‘good pregnancy sleep’ is an oxymoron, the Helix Midnight Luxe helped me get as close as possible to that elusive goal. With targeted memory foam, this mattress provided extra support across my shoulders and hips, relieving the pressure points that are often exacerbated by side sleeping—and even more so by pregnancy.”

As for those night sweats? Since Yohay opted for the GlacioTex cooling pillow top, her “internal thermostat [remained] at a steady, comfortable temperature.” (If you’re a real hot sleeper, you can also spring for the additional CoolForce layer, which is designed to pull more heat away from the body.)

Helix

All in all, Yohay finds that the Midnight Luxe offers the best of both worlds via its blend of high-density foam and individually wrapped steel coils, which, as a bonus, minimized motion transfer between her and her husband as they took turns getting up to feed their newborn. And she’s loving it more and more each day: “Like the break-in period on a new pair of shoes, I’m convinced this mattress got more comfortable over time. I’m officially a convert to the just right firmness of a medium feel mattress, and now I can’t imagine sleeping on anything else.”

Like the Saatva, the Helix is Greenguard Gold Certified and made with CertiPUR-US memory foam, ensuring that it’s free of harmful chemicals including PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead, heavy metals and formaldehyde.

Saatva Classic vs. Helix Midnight Luxe: Which Mattress Is Better?

Both mattresses offer the Goldilocks balance between softness and support thanks to their hybrid constructions, but there are pros and cons to each. While the Saatva Classic is more customizable when it comes to firmness levels, offering three options instead of a standard one, the Helix Midnight Luxe offers more in terms of cooling with its optional GlacioTex pillow top and CoolForce layer, so it’s a better choice for hot sleepers. The Helix also allows for the addition of an ErgoAlign layer, designed to target lower back pain.

If you’re a back or side sleeper, both the Saatva and Helix have you covered. If you tend to sleep on your stomach, though, consider the Saatva Classic in its firmest iteration—the medium feel of the Helix may not be best for you.

Though they’re on par comfort-wise, Saatva is the clear winner when it comes to convenience. Dickey raved about the white glove service that came with her Saatva Classic delivery, which involved free setup by a two-person team and the removal of her old mattress. Yohay, however, noted that she needed to tap her two brothers-in-law to lug her Helix up to her bedroom and help install it. Helix does offer in-home setup, but it’ll cost you another $219. Saatva’s 365-night trial also beats Helix’s 120-night one.

Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, there’s the pricing. The Helix mattress (starting at $1,264 on sale) is slightly more expensive than the Saatva (starting at $1,099 on sale), and the additional upgrades just tick the cost higher.

Bottom line? Between the two of them, the best bed for you will depend on your sleep needs and budget—but you can be confident that either one will make for a great investment.
