Like so many mattresses these days, my king-sized Helix Midnight Luxe arrived in an impressively compact box. I opted for doorstep delivery, so it took two former athletes to haul the thing up the stairs and into my bedroom, where we let it air out for 48 hours before dressing it up. If you don’t have multiple strong brothers-in-law at your disposal, the brand does offer in-home setup and removal ($219) in certain locations, where they’ll remove and dispose of your old mattress before unpacking the new one.
My Sleep Experience: 12 Months of Testing While Pregnant & Postpartum
My first impression of the Helix Midnight Luxe left me a little apprehensive. This thing is plush…perhaps a little too plush? I typically prefer a mattress on the firmer end of the spectrum, but I quickly learned that the secret to the Midnight Luxe’s universality lies in its smart construction. The structured foam and individually wrapped coils balance out the ultra-soft quilted pillow topper, so you get the support of a firmer base with the luxurious feel of a five-star hotel-quality bed. It’s the best of both worlds—no wonder everyone likes it—and despite my initial skepticism, I was hooked after just one night.
Though I’m convinced “good pregnancy sleep” is an oxymoron, the Helix Midnight Luxe helped me get as close as possible to that elusive goal. With targeted memory foam, this mattress provided extra support across my shoulders and hips, relieving the pressure points that are often exacerbated by side sleeping—and even more so by pregnancy. Cocooned by pregnancy pillows, I felt cozy and cradled by the mattress’s plush pillow topper, while the GlacioTex cooling cover kept my internal thermostat at a steady, comfortable temperature. As for the cons, my friend once joked that shifting in bed while pregnant should be an Olympic sport, and she’s not wrong. Because the mattress topper has some give to it, it did require a bit more effort to switch from one side to the other (though that difficulty disappeared once the baby bump was gone).
For me, postpartum sleep was even worse. Sure, you don’t have a bowling ball strapped to your waist anymore, but those precious hours of shut-eye are few and far between thanks to a baby whose circadian rhythm has yet to develop. Rather than tossing and turning like I usually do, this mattress helped me fall asleep (and stay asleep) fast, optimizing the handful of hours I had to rest before the tiny wails from down the hall dragged me out of bed. As a self-proclaimed bad sleeper who, ironically, needs to log a lot of sleep for both my mental and physical well-being, this was a game-changer.
As the months went by, my experience only got better. Like the break-in period on a new pair of shoes, I’m convinced this mattress got more comfortable over time. I’m officially a convert to the just right firmness of a medium feel mattress, and now I can’t imagine sleeping on anything else.
Side Sleepers, Back Sleepers, Hot Sleepers—All Are Welcome
Though constructed with side sleepers in mind, the Helix Midnight Luxe is a great option for back sleepers as well as those who toss and turn thanks to its hybrid design featuring targeted shoulder, lumbar and hip support. This diversity, plus its low motion transfer foam, also makes it a great option for couples with varying sleep styles, as evidenced by my husband and me surviving months of middle-of-the-night newborn shift changes. Plus, with an optional cooling cover and CoolForce foam layer, hot sleepers will also find sanctuary in its cloud-like embrace.
