While the dress code for royal weddings usually depends on the time of day of the event, there’s one rule that applies to every wedding…and Oprah Winfrey was quick to correct her (near) fashion faux pas.
The day before the wedding, the queen of daytime television realized the sundress she was supposed to wear to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials was beige but would possibly photograph white (um, major no-no for any wedding, royal or not). She called up designer Stella McCartney, who worked through the night (!!) before the wedding to create a completely new dress for Winfrey that wouldn’t cause any speculation about whether she was trying to steal the bride’s thunder.
The A Wrinkle in Time actress posted a video to Instagram in which she explained the situation: “I want to thank the Stella McCartney team for working all night long to get this dress finished. Because we had dress-gate. Wrong color, now we’ve got the right color. I think we’re going to do okay.” She paired the new pretty pale pink sundress and tiered skirt with a vintage Philip Treacy hat that Winfrey said she’s had since 2005.
Stella McCartney also crafted the newly minted Duchess of Sussex’s nighttime reception dress, a gorgeous custom haltered number that Markle paired with Princess Diana’s aquamarine Asprey ring as her “something blue.”
And we thought the Markle was busy before her big day…
