What’s the secret to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s longtime romance? It could be their “naughty” sense of humor, their shared love of Indian food or, more likely, it could be a promise they made to one another long ago.
In Katie Nicholl’s 2013 Kate Middleton biography, Kate: The Future Queen, she revealed that the now Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a vow to spend the rest of their lives together long before they tied the knot. As it turns out, their marriage pact actually worked.
According to Nicholl, the couple opted to discuss marriage while they were still dating so they would have a clear understanding of expectations and take the pressure off their future together so they could enjoy the present.
“There on the paradise island, William promised Kate that he was in the relationship for the long term,” Nicholl wrote in the biography. “For the very first time, they talked seriously about marriage, and with the ocean before them and beneath the night sky, they made a pact to marry.”
