Kate Middleton paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana by wearing a pair of pearl drop earrings during her latest photoshoot. But there’s one other detail that fans can’t get enough of.
Over the weekend, the royal family released a trio of never-before-seen portraits in honor of Middleton’s 40th birthday. One of the outfits included a red one-shoulder dress, which has—wait for it—pockets.
Followers immediately filled the comments section with birthday wishes, along with notes about Middleton’s dress. As Hello! magazine points out, a fair share of the messages commended the duchess for utilizing her pockets.
“You know dress pockets are a big deal when even the Duchess of Cambridge herself uses them in her official portrait,” one person wrote. “‘This dress has POCKETS! Get it in the pic!’” Another added, “The first and most important thing I noticed about this photo is that the Duchess of Cambridge was given a dress with pockets. High street designers, please take note.”
Someone else commented, “Lady in red [red heart emoji] Love the symbolism of a strong, modern woman reflected here—every woman loves a dress with pockets! The Duchess of Cambridge certainly does the look justice… a true style icon.”
The portraits were taken by professional photographer Paolo Roversi, who revealed that he asked Middleton to dance in front of the lens, so the images would look less staged.
“In the end, I wanted to take pictures in motion, so with that wonderful wide skirt I made her dance in front of my lens, a kind of accelerated waltz mixed with a pinch of rock ‘n roll,” he told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
