Fights happen. But keep in mind that the difference between couples who work out disagreements productively (the operative word) and those who don’t is simple: sleep.

According to a new study from Ohio State University, the less shut-eye you log, the more likely you are to be grumpy and annoyed when the moment comes to constructively discuss topics that have the potential to set you off.

Maybe it’s the dishes or maybe it’s something more complicated like household finances. The bottom line is that, if you’re sleep-deprived, there’s a greater likelihood that the fight will escalate and the two of you will struggle more to negotiate a positive outcome.

This isn’t to say that well-rested couples never fight. It’s more that when they do, they’re better equipped to handle disagreements with humor and patience versus name-calling and shouting, which might occur with the tired couples.

Yet another reason sleep is the answer to everything.
