The Girl Scouts Officially Have a New Uniform (and, Yes, It Includes Phone Pockets)

I vividly recall the excitment I felt when the time came for me to graduate from being a Brownie with the Girl Scouts to becoming a Junior. Swapping my patch-covered brown vest for a fresh green sash alongside some of my best friends felt like a real accomplishment, something I’d truly earned for myself, and the fact that I had a fresh piece of clothing with which to show off my achievement just made it all the better. (Especially for a fashion-obsessed kid like me.)

So when I heard that the Girl Scouts were getting new uniforms, I was a little nervous to see how these beloved childhood pieces were changing. Turns out, I shouldn’t have been concerned at all—the new uniforms are incredibly cool. And, yes, they kept the vest and the sash.

The 18 new pieces are mostly for Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors (grades 6 and up) and focus more on comfort and functionality than previous collections. There are easy wardrobe basics adorned with the signature Girl Scouts trefoil like T-shirts, leggings and a cozy sweatshirt that come in sizes small to 3X. But for those who are a bit more fashion-minded (like yours truly was as a Scout), there’s also a denim wrap skirt with cute utility pockets, a chambray camp shirt, an adorable lilac shirtdress and even a denim jacket.

As for the designers, it would only make sense to tap the talent of three young women, all students at the Fashion Institute of Technology—Nidhi Bhasin (a Girl Scout alum), Melissa Posner and Jenny Feng. The challenge was to create pieces that Gen Z Scouts could wear with ease, possibly even to non-Girl Scout events. So of course, most designs also include a handy phone pocket (now they have no excuse not to keep in touch with mom and dad while out selling cookies).

As for the signature sashes and vests, they too now come with a pocket option and are made from lighter-weight, softer materials.

You can preview and pre-order the entire collection on the Girl Scouts website, although they won’t begin shipping until mid-September. You can also use the code NEWGSSTYLE at checkout for 10 percent off pre-orders. (We suggest you use the money you save to pick up a few extra boxes of Thin Mints this year. Just an idea.)
