There Are 4 Types of Witches—Here’s Yours, Based on Your Zodiac

The word witch has had a rebirth in our modern culture, and witchcraft is finally being recognized for the earth-centric, holistic movement that is truly today. If you’ve ever wondered about different forms of witchcraft practices but didn’t know where to begin, here's a simple gateway to discovery: your sun sign

The zodiac is separated into 12 unique signs, all with distinctive characteristics, energies and lessons which also embody the spectrum of the four elements as well. Knowing your sun sign’s element (don’t worry we’ll help with that!) is a great way to align to a witch style that goes well with your elemental sun sign. If your sun sign doesn’t seem to pair well with the witchcraft styles listed below, you may want to try looking up your rising sign, which is easily done with free, online astrology calculators. Often if your sun sign doesn’t quite feel accurate, your rising sign will. For example, I’m a Taurus sun sign and while I certainly do appreciate the green magic associated with it, I’m drawn to cosmic witchcraft, which makes sense, because I know I am a Sagittarius rising sign.

Cosmic Witch: Fire Signs

Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Fire signs start the zodiac wheel of the year (thank you, Aries) and possess a certain kind of action, force and assertion that pairs well with the cosmos. If you’re a fire sign you may consider exploring cosmic witchcraft as it aligns well with your curious, creative and exploratory nature in the zodiac. Cosmic witchcraft is the study of, you guessed it, the skies—think astronomy, astrology, tracking the moon’s monthly cycle, the equinoxes and solstices.

Astrology and our planetary cycles are wonderful tools to track and predict the ebbs and flows of energy that occur as natural, repeatable cycles in our grand cosmos. Have you ever wondered things like, why do I feel so tired some parts of the month or day? Or why do I feel so energetic? Have you tracked your moods and energy levels with the moon’s cycle or even your monthly cycle? When you start to pay attention to the lessons of astrology and the cosmic forecast you can better plan and live your life from a place that works with the magic of the universe’s natural rhythms. It’s accessible magic for anyone willing to study, learn and observe. Start by tracking your next month from New Moon to Full Moon each day and observing your energy levels or patterns (hint: November’s New Moon kicks off on November 19th in Scorpio).

Green Witch: Earth Signs

Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

The earth signs are known in astrology circles to be the ones closely associated with nature, the animals and the land. This kind of innate aptitude for the earth’s magic is a great alignment with green witchcraft. Green witchcraft is about drawing your strength, wisdom and spell work from the power of the land itself. There is a deep reverence for and appreciation of the cycles of nature, the plant and animal kingdom and the ways in which our earth demonstrates its power and wisdom. To get started try simple things like starting your own garden; even in the winter you can start a small container garden of herbs in the window.

Speaking of herbs, learning more about the basic herbs along with their qualities and abilities is another approachable way to step into green witchcraft. Green witches use herbs and plants to infuse magic into their daily lives. Teas and cooking infused with herbal intentions is another great way to incorporate a daily green practice along with embracing sustainable, eco-friendly living practices that help protect our beautiful earth, who is the cauldron and source of all this magic.

Kitchen Witch: Water Signs

Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

The heart of the home is always said to be the kitchen, and the heart of the zodiac tends to center around hearth, home, family and transformation of the water signs. What better kind of alchemy than infusing raw ingredients into wholesome, deliberately crafted food that puts a spell of love, wealth and health on all who dine? Kitchen witchery is preparing food that is deliberately infused with intention. It's an age-old practice because it is a powerful, simple approach to magic that is accessible to everyone. Think: a loved one making you chicken soup when you’re sick. Black-eyed peas to ring in a prosperous New Year. A lovingly baked cake on your birthday. The maker creates with deliberate thoughts of love and joy for the one they create for.

Right now is a great season to try your hand at kitchen witchery as it pairs so perfectly with the fall and upcoming winter. Many of the seasonal items that are plentiful right now are the exact staples of this type of fun, easy magic. Some basics include apples (love, healing, wisdom), salt (protective, purifying) and nutmeg (clarity, abundance).

Crystal Witch: Air Signs

Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Air signs embody intelligence, grace, and a willingness to see and so things outside the status quo. Your curious and vibrant personality is a wonderful match for the magic of crystal witchcraft. The world of crystals appeases your stylish streak (air signs have great style!) with the ability to cultivate a crystal collection that looks fabulous in your home or office. You may already have a small crystal collection going. Beyond the aesthetics however, is the deep knowledge of the crystal’s geological and energetic properties. The vast and comprehensive knowledge required to master the world of crystal witchcraft is an ideal match for the curious nature of air signs. Crystal witches utilize the energetic properties of our mineral and gemstone world to amplify their intentions and imbue their physical space with the metaphysical healing, protective and abundance-attracting qualities in our crystal companion world.

If you’re new to crystals, don’t feel overwhelmed or compelled to know it all. Ease your way in with some introductory courses, books and a visit to your local crystal shop to start with the basics and work your way up from there.
