Finding a perfectly ripe melon on the supermarket shelf might as well be a guessing game. Which is why we love this super easy--and, frankly, a little bit meditative--produce trick.
What you do: Stroll down the aisle until you find the shelf with all the melons. Pick up the one you feel has the most fruit salad potential, close your eyes and take a deep whiff.
Here’s what you’re looking for: If you can tell it’s a melon simply by the scent, it’s ripe and ready to go. If you can’t--or it smells a bit musky--the melon is either under-ripe or, worse, old.
People are staring. They also have bad melons in their carts. Sucks to be them.
