This ‘Sex Education’ Star Was Just Announced as the Next Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’

Hold on tight, Whovians—we have a new star who will be taking on the role of the Doctor in BBC's highly-popular science fiction series, Doctor Who. Early this morning, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Ncuti Gatwa, who is known for his starring role as Eric Effiong on Sex Education, will be filling the titular part.

Gatwa will replace Jodie Whittaker (who has played the Doctor since the end of 2017) and he will make history as the first Black actor to portray the iconic Time Lord. While talking with The Hollywood Reporter about the role, Gatwa said, “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.”

The 29-year-old star continued, “This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavor my upmost to do the same.”

As the fourteenth Doctor, Gatwa is the second-youngest actor to ever play the part, behind Matt Smith (who also played a young Prince Philip on The Crown). For Gatwa's arc, the show will be executive produced by Russell T. Davies, who is known for creating acclaimed series like It's a Sin and Queer as Folk.

Gatwa shared his excitement to work with Davies, saying, “Russell T. Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself, and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground.”

We can't wait to see one of our favorite Sex Education stars transform into the role of the Doctor.
