A big solar eclipse lights things up

In the story of August that “changes everything,” this week is chock full of key plot points. There’s hardly a day without big shifts, new developments and surprising reversals. The good news? It ends in some of this month’s best astrology.

On Sunday the 9th, Mercury leaves Cancer and enters Leo. This is the first time since May that Mercury has been in a sign other than Cancer. While a nice dip into the nostalgic waters of the crab’s sign can give some beautiful emotional moments, this summer has been fully immersed and felt heavy with emotion. So, Mercury’s shift into Leo is as exciting for what lies ahead as it is a relief for leaving some emotional weight behind.

Mercury in Leo is ebullient and full of hot takes, and sharing the sign with Jupiter makes it prone to exaggeration and hyperbole. Social media will be fun to watch, but in places where cooler heads should prevail, theatrical communication can cause unnecessary drama and conflict.

Monday the 10th gets the juices flowing as Venus and Pluto flow together from their respective Air signs. Venus in a harmonious aspect to Pluto can increase our attraction to danger and our tolerance for risk-taking behavior. Later in the day, Venus opposes Neptune, clouding our ability to tell the difference between idealism and utter delusion. Reality testing is skewed, so be careful what you go along with.

On Tuesday the 11th, Mars departs frenetic Gemini for emotive Cancer. One day was the only rest the Cancer area of our lives got before yet another story arises in that context. Mars in Cancer is protective, a powerful guardian of home life, family and children. However, it can also be reactive, emotionally manipulative and have difficulty distinguishing what is self-interest and what is truly for the greater good.

The solar eclipse on Wednesday the 12th is a powerful Leo new moon that resets significant storylines in the Leo area of each of our lives. It’s the first eclipse we’ve had there since 2018, and it’s bound to shift things through a plot twist or a big insight. It’s a day where the status quo is suspended, and what things seem and what they are can change dramatically.

Thursday through Saturday sees a host of gentle and harmonious contact between the luckiest and most helpful planets. Mercury and Venus on Thursday put their hearts together to find win-win solutions, and Saturday sees Mercury and Jupiter together in the sky for some much-needed optimism, while the moon joins Venus in sparkling Libra. It’s a beautiful and potent weekend in the midst of eclipses and bodes well for relationships and solution-focused thinking.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Your home quagmire releases its grip for a day and your sights turn towards creativity, pleasure and children (whether you have them or wish you did). An eclipse in Leo can change things dramatically in this space, and with fortunate planets all aligning, it’s likely to go your way. Mars moves into your house though, asking for effort at home to rebuild or repair things emotional or corporeal that you’ve been meaning to get to.

This week’s mantra: “create”

Cheeky illustration of a young non-binary person petting a bull.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

For a moment, Mercury stops worrying so much and moves into the grounding place of your home and family. Mars clambers in closely though to pursue any loose ends left in your community and daily network. The eclipse changes your view on home and family matters. You might feel a call to a new location or recognize how far you’ve come from where you started.

This week’s mantra: “foundations”

Cheeky illustration of identical twins with long dark hair and a statement earrings back-to-back, smirking at each other.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Your financial life gets a momentary rest when Mercury turns its sights on your communication house and you finally find the language to describe your experience. It’s a great week to reconnect with your siblings and extended family. Mars entering your money house increases conflict there—or at least the need for clear boundaries and a clearer budget.

This week’s mantra: “knowledge is power”

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

The week begins with the moon in your sign, and your intuition can guide you as to what’s important. Mercury takes on your finances and makes a plan for any upcoming changes. There’s a powerful pivot in your relationship with resources that’s likely about to take place. Keep your mind open that a temporary loss could be an opening for a bigger win later on. Mars in your sign gives you back some physical stamina.

This week’s mantra: “worthy”

Cheeky illustration of a woman of Asian-descent wearing a sheer coral top with her hair half-up in pigtail puns, the rest down. She is hugging a lion, who is smirking.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

Mercury is back at it after being MIA for the summer, and no sign is more grateful or stands to benefit more than Leo. Your voice comes back and a massive solar eclipse sloughs off years of outdated beliefs about yourself to step out into the spotlight again. Be careful who you trust though, as Mars slips into your house of hidden enemies, someone close could seek to undermine you.

This week’s mantra: “glow up”

Cheeky illustration with a light blue background of a woman wearing a coral shirt coyly poking out from behind her hands.

Virgo (August 23 - September 23)

It’s a tricky week ahead for you, Virgo. There’s a pull towards self-understanding that might have you on an introverted retreat. You’re learning things about yourself you might have been afraid to know, but somehow it all seems like it will be OK. Mars in your house of aspirations fills you with feeling and motivation to move towards your dreams even if you are not sure of the way.

This week’s mantra: “reflect”

Libra (September 23 - October 21)

You can relax in the work department for one day when Mercury turns its focus to your future and goals you envision for yourself. Life looks different and so do you. Mars then heads into your career sector to push forward the changes you need. But the eclipse marks a departure from how you thought everything would be to open you up to the life that awaits.

This week’s mantra: “visionary”

680x400 Scorpio%402x

Scorpio (October 22 - November 21)

Your professional life is heating up as your values shift with all the changes this year. You’re likely being recognized for what you do while trying to consider the meaning behind it all. This eclipse could shift your thoughts on what’s really important for you to accomplish and which ambitions have hollowed out. You’ll have to make some moves, but they won’t be obvious.

This week’s mantra: “the eulogy assignment”

Cheeky illustration of a Black woman with purple hair on an orange background. She's in a wearing jean jacket, with a quiver strapped across her back and arrows sticking out.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Mercury is out of the weeds and looking towards adventure. What will you do with your one wild and precious life? It all feels exciting, and big changes lay ahead as you change your state of mind. Mars entering your house of debts means you must balance financial and emotional obligations in order to do it.

This week’s mantra: “look at the map”

A cheeky image of a woman of color with dark hair holding a pink goat by the horns. The background is pink and her shirt is darker pink.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

Your relational life is fully the focus right now. You’re changing who you let in, how you balance the give and take and what you allow in partnership. You don’t have to hold the entire shadow of the relationship or hide your own desire to be seen. Debt clearing, emotional and financial is the goal of this moment. You may need to rock the boat, but it’s ultimately for a good cause.

This week’s mantra: “change”

Cheeky image of a Black woman with blue hair on a light blue background. She's holding blue water in her palms, which is bubbling up and taking shape as her hair.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

You can finally move on from just managing the day-to-day and think about relationships and the role they play in your life. If the eclipse is any indication, relationships are about to take center-stage for a bit. Mars dips into your daily work house, but it’s likely to bring stamina and the energy to work out regularly. Get curious how other people see you and trust their advice for once.

This week’s mantra: “in a lover’s eye”

Cheeky illustration of a gender-fluid white person with short-cropped orange hair. They're wearing a light blue halter top as two bright pink koi fish circle their head.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

Your mind shifts from romance to self-care. How you spend your days, treat your body, feed your body and serve other people becomes of utmost concern. Your voice returns as a powerful advocate even if you feel unsure. What you are worth and worthy of is due for a massive upgrade, but first it must change in your own eyes.

This week’s mantra: “mirror gazing”
