The One Unroyal Thing You May Have Missed in Prince Louis’s Birthday Portrait

There was a lot to take in when Prince Louis’s first birthday portraits arrived. There were the chubby cheeks, the striking resemblance he bore to his dad, Prince William, and one other detail that probably isn’t Gan-Gan Queen Elizabeth approved.

In the photo slideshow captured by his mom, Kate Middleton, Prince Louis plays in the woods surrounding his family’s country home, Anmer Hall, in Norfolk, England. He even flashes his two-tooth grin at the camera. And while we were preoccupied with his pudgy hands and strong eyebrow game, something pretty standard for a 1-year-old was taking place on his sweater.

No, it didn’t have spittle on it, though that’d be a good guess given the fact that he’s still a little guy. Instead, his red knit jumper was covered in moss.

He is, after all, sitting on a rock blanketed in moss, so it makes sense…especially when you scroll to the second photo and see that he’s laying tummy-down on top of a whole mess of moss. (Try saying that five times fast.) But when your gifted photographer mom is taking your first birthday portrait, why not let loose and just be your baby self?

This is just the latest installment of “Royals: They’re just like us!” moments courtesy of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s brood. Last year, their holiday photo featured the 37-year-old parents in jeans while Prince George (5) balanced precociously on one foot in little rain boots and Princess Charlotte (3) smiled cheekily at the camera.

If Queen Elizabeth or Prince Charles were there, they may have suggested a quick swipe of a lint roller, but we love seeing Prince Louis in his element.

You keep doing you, your mini majesty, hot mess (moss?) and all.
