Meet the Experts

  • Cindy Conroy is a New York- and Toronto-based fashion expert and TV host who has worked with celebs like Christina Milian,. Her work has appeared in New York Magazine and WWD as well as PureWow.
  • Kim Appelt is a renowned celebrity stylist, personal stylist and one of Canada’s top fashion stylists with an impressive ability to predict trends. She’s also the author of Style for Everybody and her work has appeared on GMA as well as in InStyle and Brides

What Are the Top Fall Wedding Guest Dress Trends?

“Dressing appropriately for a fall wedding as a guest is all about finding the right balance between style and comfort while also considering the season's weather and the venue,” notes Appelt. “The most important thing is to feel comfortable and confident in your outfit.” Additionally, Appelt notes that you want to be on the lookout for a dress that won’t overshadow the bride, because it’s her big day after all…not yours. For example, “Stay away from delicate sheer dresses,” says Conroy. “While they’re having a moment, the barely-there look is a sure way to take attention away from the bride. It’s a close second to wearing white at a wedding.” Noted.

Instead, Conroy suggests to opt for some of the hottest looks of the season, like voluminous puff sleeves and ruffled trim dresses. For any Greta Gerwig stans, the Barbiecore trend isn’t going anywhere either, according to Appelt. “There are many shades of Barbie pink in the stores right now that are perfect for an early fall wedding,” she says. We’ve even included a few below that aren’t Pepto Bismol pink either, like the Rhode Lulani Dress ($595) and the Bardot Fontana Floral Midi Dress ($189), to name a few.

How to Dress for a Fall Wedding

Picking a dress for a fall wedding can be stressful based on the sheer number of gowns online, but we’re here to help. “Colors like balmy caramel, vibrant jewel tones, eternal gold and mustard,” as well as a dose of texture, like “a feathered heel, croc embossed metallic clutch, fringed shawl or ribbon ankle-wrapped stilettos bring the heat on chilly fall evenings,” Conroy tells us.

“If you want [to highlight] your curves, punchy colors and textured frocks made of velvet are sure winners. The latter also keeps you warm as evening turns to night,” she adds. Most importantly, Appelt reminds that it all comes down to finding an outfit that’s not only appropriate, but that expresses your style. So, whether you're headed to an indoor glam wedding or an outdoor micro wedding, we've found the most gorgeous wedding guest dresses perfect for any fall affair.

23 Comfortable Wedding Shoes That You Won’t Have to Kick Off Mid-Reception

Best Drape Dress

1. A&F Emerson Floaty Midi Dress

Abercrombie & Fitch

  • What We Like: easy to wash, multiple lengths, multiple colors
  • What We Don't Like: might not flatter small chests
  • Size range: XXS to XXL
  • Material: modal, nylon, polyester, elastane

This sweet and flowy dress is incredibly easy to wear and oh-so flattering, not to mention a perfect pick for that outdoor wedding you have coming up at the end of September. The dress is machine washable and available in petite, regular and tall fits, so there’s no need for a last-minute run to the tailor. It has a ruched bodice that cinches at the waist and tapers into a tiered floaty skirt. And we’re suckers for short, puff sleeves as they’re a godsend on breezy nights when you’re sans a jacket. But that’s not the end of it. You wouldn’t know upon first glance, but this sweet deep plum dress—which comes in four other colors—has pockets that’ll hide away anything you need for your BFF’s big day, like tissues for when she’s saying her vows.

Best Color Range

2. BTFBM Sleeveless Cocktail Dress

Amazon

  • What We Like: multiple color options
  • What We Don't Like: shows stains easily
  • Size range: 2 to 22 (petite and regular fits available)
  • Material: viscose, elastane

There’s something James Bond-esq about wearing a high-neck satin dress for a wedding that’s cocktail attire. Both classy and chic, this BTFBM sleeveless cocktail dress from Amazon elegantly frames the shoulders with beautiful draping at the neck and bodice. The waistband is elastic, which makes it super flexible as you make your way from the buffet table to the dance floor and it’s supposedly super silky on the skin. “I can’t believe how perfect this dress was for my friend’s wedding, but also how beautiful I felt in it,” writes Amazon reviewer Felipe of this stunner that’s available in a whopping 18 colors. “It fit perfectly. The color was amazing and I received so many compliments, too. I’m ready to buy in different colors.” Just note that, because it’s made of such a thin polyester and elastane blend, it will hold onto deodorant or sweat stains easily.

Best Fitting Dress

3. Norma Kamali Diana Dress

Revolve

  • What We Like: ruching, figure-snatching, breathable, comfortable
  • What We Don't Like: built-in bodysuit might make it hard to go to the bathroom
  • Size range: XXS to XL
  • Material: polyester, spandex

There’s a reason the Diana Dress by Norma Kamali is such a PureWow reader favorite. For one, the off-the-shoulder neckline and complimentary asymmetrical hemline look gorgeous together. Even the bunched material looks luxurious and ultra-flattering against the body. But don’t just take our word for it, reviewer Carolina bought this dress over a year ago in burnt orange and says, “I wore this dress to my friend’s wedding and let me just say…this is so flattering! It bunches in all the right places and has a built-in leotard that snatches you in (which is surprisingly comfortable and doesn’t at all dig into my skin). The fabric is thick but breathable, making the dress look and feel expensive all while being extremely comfortable to wear. I can’t wait to wear this again—this time on vacation!”

Best Skater Dress

4. Lulus Floral Forever Skater Dress

Lulus

  • What We Like: skater skirt, smocked bodice, long sleeves, lightweight
  • What We Don't Like: no stretch in fabric, may look too short on long torsos
  • Size range: XXS to XL
  • Material: polyester

Flirty, purty and thriving. We’re talking about this dress from Lulus that stole our hearts. The lightweight skater skirt makes any twirl on the dance floor dramatic in the best way possible, and we’re loving the combination of the season’s two hottest colors—green and Barbiecore pink—that unexpectedly work well together come fall. But the devil’s in the details, as they say, and the star selling points of this smocked mini dress has to be the ruffle-adorned neckline and the smocked cuffs on the long sleeves. Though many reviewers find the smocked fabric to be breathable and forgiving, one reviewer with large boobs and long torso noted that the waistline would look more flattering on someone who’s petite and has a short torso.

Best Square Neck Dress

5. Reformation Frankie Silk Dress

Reformation

  • What We Like: back slit, square neckline, floral pattern
  • What We Don't Like: may need to be hemmed, non-adjustable straps
  • Size range: 0 to 12
  • Material: silk charmeuse

When we think about wedding guest dress shopping for fall, we automatically think about Reformation. We’re weak in the knees over their sustainability and carbon neutral practices and, most importantly, head-over-heels in love with the dresses, like this floral Frankie Silk Dress. It’s fitted throughout the body and hugs your curves, creating the illusion of an hourglass figure (even if you don’t have one). The square neckline is flattering on any bust, but especially suitable for women with bigger boobs, and it has a sexy slit in the back of the dress for functionality (aka, making it possible to walk and move). Made with 100 percent silk, the material will slide like butter against your skin, but because it has fixed straps, shorter women may need to make alterations—though you can get this done for free by following Reformation's instructions.

Best Mini Dress

6. Pomander Place Crepe Kenzo Dress

Tuckernuck

  • What We Like: casual, modest, versatile, empire waist
  • What We Don't Like: runs slightly large
  • Size range: XXS to XXXL
  • Material: polyester, spandex

If you’re headed to a casual wedding where shorter dresses are acceptable attire, this is your sign to consider an LBD (though this style also comes in a fiery red and forest green). It’s classy and modest thanks to the long sleeves, but in no way boring. Just look at the elasticated ruffle cuffs and loose, tiered empire waist that make this frock flirty and feminine. We also adore the V-neck and suggest layering necklaces to spice things up and draw the attention towards your décolletage. But let’s put aside the bells and whistles for one second and appreciate the versatility. Seriously, how many of your other wedding guest dresses can be reworn as easily this one? Just swap out your heels with some comfortable flats and you’re ready for Sunday brunch. Some reviews say it runs slightly big, so we suggest sizing down if you’re between sizes.

Best One-Shoulder Dress

7. ASOS DESIGN One Shoulder Satin Dress

ASOS

  • What We Like: drape back, thigh-high slit, strappy one-shoulder
  • What We Don't Like: may not be suitable for women with large chests
  • Size range: 0 to 14
  • Material: polyester, elastane

This classy option is the perfect mixture of sweet and sexy. Not for the faint of heart, it boasts a one-shoulder neck and thigh-high slit that shows off a good amount of skin. (Psst…the leg pop in those photos will look unreal.) We are also obsessed with this navy for fall. And can we hear a little commotion for the back of the dress? It has a drape along the back that swoops just below the shoulder blade.

Best Chiffon Dress

8. ASTR the Label Anora Maxi Dress

ASTR the Label

  • What We Like: cinched waist, slightly metallic, slit, ruffled skirt
  • What We Don't Like: might be a touch long
  • Size range: XS to XL
  • Material: polyester

“I'm absolutely in love with this dress,” raves Melissa, a Revolve reviewer. “The back is amazing, the shoulders have a little puff (which is really flattering) and the material has some metallic flecks in it that is so pretty!” Mimi, another reviewer, was quick to agree, noting how flattering it lays on her body—no doubt, thanks to the ruffled skirt, cinched waist and side slit. Her only qualm is that it falls slightly long against her short stature of 5’3”, but nothing a little hemming can’t fix. Aside from the fact that it’s lined and has the prettiest specs of metallics in the material, there’s one more detail we’re loving on fall wedding guest dresses. Can you sense a theme? It’s the elasticated cuffs, of course. Well, that and a loose long sleeve.

Best Empire Waist Dress

9. Boden Flippy Jersey Midi Dress

Boden

  • What We Like: empire waist, flutter sleeves, inclusive sizes, petite and regular lengths
  • What We Don't Like: slightly long
  • Size range: 2 to 22 (petite and regular fits available)
  • Material: viscose, elastane

If you’re looking for a dress with a bit more coverage, you’ll adore this Boden style that has voluminous flutter sleeves, a fitted empire waist and modest neckline. It’s both simple, elegant and suitable to wear at any fall wedding you have coming up. Plus, we go bananas over a green smock for fall, as it comprises of earthy, muted tones yet still manages to feel vibrant. The brand has an array of inclusive sizes, ranging from two to 22, and it comes in a black and white tulip pattern or a deep navy. (Psst…it’s even available in petite and regular lengths, too.)

Most Elegant Dress

10. J.Crew Smocked Drop-Waist Dress

J.Crew

  • What We Like: mock neck, drop waist, smocked
  • What We Don't Like: sleeveless
  • Size range: XXXS to 3X
  • Material: cotton

If there’s anything we learned from Sophia Richie this summer, it’s that we should never overlook an elegant, timeless piece that has an understated silhouette and neutral color scheme. In fact, it’s garbs like this J.Crew drop-waist dress that stir ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ from your friends and family. The sleeveless frock has a modest neckline and is smocked all along the bodice, making it tremendously comfortable and stretchy. Just below the hips, the cotton poplin billows out and creates the illusion of a tall, elongated frame. It’s simply beautiful if you ask us.

Best Linen Dress

11. Zara Ruffled Slip Dress

Zara

  • What We Like: good for warmer climates, adjustable straps
  • What We Don't Like: might now work in cooler climates
  • Size range: XS to XL
  • Material: viscose, linen

Zara has tons of dress options available, particularly linen frocks that are picture-perfect and exactly what you want to wear for the wedding you have coming up in Arizona or Palm Springs, California. In those warmer climates, this dress with a hidden zipper will keep you cool, but still look impeccable paired with a light jacket or shawl, if needed. Plus, it has a lovely, ruffled trim that breaks up the straight cut of the silhouette and adjustable straps guaranteed to stay on your shoulders all day and night.

Best Investment Dress

12. Rhode Lulani Dress

Rhode

  • What We Like: cap sleeves, flared hem, slender fit
  • What We Don't Like: pricey
  • Size range: 0 to 14 (petite and regular fits available)
  • Material: viscose

If it were up to Barbie, we’d be wearing pink all year round, and this Rhode number has a subtle, vibrant vibe. PureWow’s associate fashion editor Stephanie Meraz can’t wait to get her hands on this beauty, saying, “I’m really excited to receive this in the mail soon, and wear it for an upcoming bridal shower. I’d wear it for the wedding, but I’m just too dang impatient! I’ve always gravitated towards classy, modest dresses—I think there’s something so sexy in ‘em, like the slender fit of the dress, the playful flared hem and the billowy cap sleeves that are SO me. And can we talk about that pink diamond stitch print that has pops of blues, greens and yellows? Très magnifique!” Meraz’s choice is available to shop in five additional colors, like a rich gold lotus and sleek black that’ll last you for years to come without falling out of style. “It’s definitely an expensive select, but I’m all about finding investment pieces that I can hopefully give to my future daughter,” adds Meraz.

Best Pleated Dress

13. Mango Asymmetrical Pleated Dress

Mango

  • What We Like: pleated, thick strap, lined, asymmetric hem
  • What We Don't Like: material stains easily
  • Size range: 0 to 12
  • Material: polyester

There’s something whimsical about pleated dresses like this one from Mango. Fully lined, the pleats on this blue beauty concentrate near the side zip, gathering fabric right where the top of the hip sits and naturally accentuating the smallest part of your waist. Because it’s pulled in that area, the pleats surge outwards along the bust and legs in an almost oceanic-like movement. As if that weren’t enough, it also has the most beautiful asymmetrical hemline that follows the same cut of the thick, one-shoulder top. While it’s a true midi length, we find this to be a hybrid maxi length, especially for shorter women who might find the bottom of the angular hem hits floor length. If you’re reading this and you happen to be the bride-to-be, it also comes in a striking white that’ll look stunning for the rehearsal dinner.

Best Slimming Dress

14. Danielle Guizio Daye Midi Dress

Danielle Guizio

  • What We Like: smoothing effect, bra-friendly, bateau neckline, stretchy
  • What We Don't Like: pricey
  • Size range: 0 to 14 (petite and regular fits available)
  • Material: polyester, nylon, spandex

ICYDK, Danielle Guizio is a force amongst bold fashionistas who love a flattering corset, structured suiting, and slinky silhouette. Unlike Guizio’s usual head-turning minis and risqué designs, the Daye midi dress is something we’d see out of Elizabeth James’s closet (IYKYK) in the Parent Trap. Understated and eternally romantic, it has a sophisticated bateau neckline, high-low hem that looks gorgeous when you walk and shoulder straps wide enough to hide your (non-strapless) bra. But what makes this dress so special has to be the fact that it’s made from a stretch jersey that’s both extremely comfortable and smoothing, so you can leave your shapewear behind if you want.

Best Cold Shoulder Dress

15. ASOS DESIGN Long Sleeve Bias Maxi Dress

ASOS

  • What We Like: cold shoulder sleeves, tie-closures, bias cut, editor-approved
  • What We Don't Like: inexpensive fabric
  • Size range: S to XXL
  • Material: polyester

Everything about this dreamy bias cut maxi oozes romance and elegance, which is exactly what you’ll want to emulate at your sister’s reception under the stars. This has an untraditional cold-shoulder sleeve, with the traditional spaghetti straps along the shoulders and a drop sleeve that connects to the sides. “If I could be a dress, I’d be this one,” says Meraz. “Shopping is my job, so you can bet that I’ve seen a lot of dresses out there, but this khaki stunner has every detail I love in a design, from the open slits along the wrist that flap with a breeze to the sexy tie closures at the boobs and back. It might not look ‘easy’ to wear, as the slim fit can be a little unforgiving after a meal, but that’s nothing my Spanx can’t fix. And I can assure you that tie closures are unexpectedly more supportive than you think.”

Best Leopard Print Dress

16. PRETTYGARDEN Leopard Ruffle Maxi Dress

Amazon

  • What We Like: snap closure that’s suitable for bigger boobs, affordable, lined
  • What We Don't Like: thin material
  • Size range: S to XXL
  • Material: polyester

With more than 2,400 five-star reviews on Amazon, this PRETTYGARDEN maxi dress is a must-have fall wedding guest dress. According to one satisfied reviewer, it “…is surprisingly well-made. The front panels are lined, and a small snap ensures no awkward gap across the bustline. All seams are serged (aka, no fraying) and the neckline in nicely finished. There is a slip lining which was an unexpected surprise.” Others adore how forgiving this dress is, and that tie waistband will even go as far as to accentuate your figure. Not to mention, there are 25 colorways to select from, like a muted khaki or this apricot leopard print that’s subtle enough to not upstage or distract from the bride’s moment.

Best Plus Size Dress

17. Buxom Couture Faux Wrap Dress

Nordstrom

  • What We Like: wrap dress, plus size, fluttery sleeves
  • What We Don't Like: unlined
  • Size range: 1X to 3X
  • Material: polyester, spandex

Let’s face it, finding plus-size wedding guest dresses isn’t always an easy feat when a lot of the options at popular retailer sites end in sizes large or extra-large. However, this Buxom Couture dress was made for plus-size women in mind, catering to sizes 1X through 3X. Wrap dresses are uber-flattering, too, as they cinch in the smallest part of your waist and accentuate your natural curves, while the fluttery sleeves elevate the formality of the dress and look slimming against the arms.

Best Velvet Dress

18. Azazie Blair Velvet Floor-Length Dress

Azazie

  • What We Like: inclusive sizing, custom sizing, velvet material, boat neck, slit
  • What We Don't Like: no sleeves
  • Size range: A0 to A30 (custom sizing available)
  • Material: velvet

This velvet floor-length gown is exactly what you’ll want to wear to a fall wedding that requires black-tie attire. It boasts an elegant boat neck that grazes the tops of your collarbones and cascades like water off the body. And thanks to the gathering along the side of the hip, it’ll help make your waist look smaller and hide a food baby (you know, for after you enjoy a slice of cake). Our favorite detail is undoubtedly the spicy high slit along the side that your date will love. Azazie is known for having an abundance of sizes, and they also offer custom sizing that’ll be special made to fit your measurements in just a few weeks.

Best Designer Dress

19. V. Chapman Lily Ruched & Ruffled Midi Dress

Anthropologie

  • What We Like: ruching, ruffles, belt tie, pregnancy-friendly, true-to-size
  • What We Don't Like: pricey
  • Size range: 0 to 18
  • Material: polyester, spandex

This dreamy navy V. Chapman Lily dress is darling, from the ruched bodice to the feminine ruffles tiered along the fitted skirt and dainty self-tie belt along the waist. Because of the ruching, you can expect this the material to feel stretchy, making it a great option for expecting mamas. One reviewer writes, “I wore this dress 33 weeks pregnant and it fit great! I ordered two sizes larger than my normal size to accommodate for the bump. The dress was extremely flattering even at this stage of pregnancy.” Others loved how this number fit like a glove.

Best Black-Tie Dress

20. Silk Maison Piano Halterneck Maxi Silk Dress

Silk Maison

  • What We Like: 100 percent silk, some cleavage, open back, soft
  • What We Don't Like: dry-clean only
  • Size range: XXS to L
  • Material: mulberry silk

OK, so you’re headed to Europe for your best friend’s wedding, but you have no idea what to wear. Enter: this stunning Silk Maison number that’s sophisticated and chic. It has a supportive halter neckline that also shows off some cleavage, and an open back for the sultriest surprise. That silky satin against your skin will feel gentle and comfortable, because there’s nothing worse than wearing a beautiful gown that you can’t wait to take off. In fact, Silk Maison reviewer Sarah says, “The silk fabric is so smooth and silky, it feels like a dream against my skin.” From the high slit and black and white halter laces, you’ll be looking like the best dressed guest, easily.

Best Halter Dress

21. Ulla Johnson Simona Dress

Ulla Johnson

  • What We Like: autumnal design, cotton-blend, adjustable halter straps
  • What We Don't Like: pricey
  • Size range: 0 to 16
  • Material: cotton, viscose

“I have been dreaming about this dress lately,” says PureWow fashion editor Abby Hepworth. “The color, the ruffles—it’s just so fun! And I like that the print feels more autumnal, but I won’t overheat breaking it down on the dance floor thanks to the open neckline and cotton-blend material.” Moreover, the designer dress has a halter spaghetti strap tie that you can adjust to your liking, which will affect how supportive the top feels. And we have to admit, it’s nearly impossible to find anything wrong with the dress, besides the fact that it’s on the pricier side (though we’re willing to overlook that because it’s made impeccably well and with high-quality materials).

Best Open Back Dress

22. Bardot Fontana Floral Midi Dress

Nordstrom

  • What We Like: cotton lining, cutout back and sides
  • What We Don't Like: cannot wear a bra
  • Size range: 2 to 12
  • Material: lyocell, nylon, cotton lining

Just because fall is around the corner doesn’t mean you have to store away your open-back dresses for the season. Take the Bardot Fontana floral midi dress, for example, which has an alluring open back that’s framed by curtain-like material along the shoulder blades. The cutout even connects to the front of the dress in the middle of the torso, breaking up the pattern and complementing the figure. And the high neckline and balloon, elbow-length sleeves work to balance out the proportions. According to Nordstrom, it made with a cotton lining, so you can bet it’ll feel lightweight and breathable on your skin.

Best Jumpsuit Mini Dress

23. Zara Satin Effect Short Jumpsuit

Zara

  • What We Like: jumpsuit, balloon sleeves, elastic waist, affordable
  • What We Don't Like: inexpensive fabric
  • Size range: XS to XL
  • Material: polyester

No one will guess that you’re not wearing a dress when you slip on this Zara jumpsuit. It’s mini, yet won’t feel too revealing thanks to the built-in shorts hidden below the skirt’s fabric. And it has the balloon sleeves that gather just below the elbow, and which celebrity stylist Conroy mentioned is going to be hot this fall. We also love that it has a comfortable elastic waist that’ll give and stretch. Pair it with your finest heels and drop necklace or opt for flats and hoop earrings for the destination wedding your attending in Cabo. For $50, we’re adding this jumpsuit to our cart ASAP.

fall wedding guest dresses Lulus Molinetto Lace Maxi Dress
  • What We Like: lace, plunge neck, high-coverage back, ruffles
  • What We Don't Like: may require boob tape, women with big boobs may feel it shows too much cleavage
  • Size range: XXS to 3X
  • Material: cotton, nylon, polyester, spandex

From the tiered ruffles to the deep plunge neckline, this Lulus beauty is a sure-fire way to stun the singles table at the wedding. One happy customer writes, “Loved this dress! I received so many compliments on it and I will definitely wear it again…It has a timeless style and could see this being very flattering on ANY type of body. I’m 5’4” with a short torso and (very) flat chest, so I was worried the dress would hang off my upper body or I’d drown in all the fabric but was SO surprised at how good it looked! I added a little bit of clothing tape along the V-neckline and [it] worked like a charm! The length was also perfect with or without heels,” though she does recommend sizing down from your usual size, as she and other reviewers report that it runs slightly big, especially in the chest. In fact, for some buyers with bigger boobs, it might show too much cleavage, but the high-coverage back purportedly makes up for what it lacks in the front.
