The Top Summer Wedding Guest Trends for 2023:
Maximalist Prints. A true standout from the other trend predictions on this list, vibrant colors and bold prints are expected to thrive this summer. But proceed with caution—the last thing you want is to draw too much attention to yourself and potentially upstage the happy couple. “If you’re on the hunt for a vibrantly-hued wedding guest dress this summer, I recommend opting for clementine orange, which is Stitch Fix’s Color of the Year,” advises Reese. “The saturated, juicy orange will give your look (and your mood!) a boost that’s perfect for celebrating the happy couple on the reception dance floor! The best part? This shade is flattering across a wide variety of skin tones.”
Solid Hues. “Solid colors are a major go-to this season, whether it’s a bright pink or a baby blue pastel,” says Loizou. If a maximalist print isn’t really your vibe, but you’re sick and tired of your same old LBD, opt for a single cheery hue instead. “Sticking to one color allows more room to have fun and get creative with accessories,” Loizou explains. To shake things up, try adding a contrasting clutch or some vibrant earrings.
Timeless Classics. “Last summer, we saw a 21 percent increase in requests for wedding-specific looks from clients,” says Reese. And that trend is only continuing as we head into summer ’23 “with requests for items that can be worn again and again for other weddings and more formal occasions.” Folks want dresses that aren’t necessarily tied to a hot trend, or even a specific season, preferring classic black or navy satin midis over Barbie pink cutouts. “Having a staple wedding guest dress that can be paired with items you already have in your rotation will ensure you always have an option that you feel comfortable reaching for again in the future.”
Dark Florals and Small Blooms. Floral prints will always be a hot option for spring and summer, but according to Reese, those with a navy or black background, in addition to smaller scale blooms, are the way to go in 2023. “Small floral patterns are more neutral than many expect,” she explains, “which adds to their versatility.” If you do want to go lighter, Loizou suggests sticking with those smaller scale florals and leaning into baby pink or summery shades of green. “Opt for scattered prints in light greens or pale pinks to add a romantic touch to your look.”
What to Avoid in a Wedding Guest Dress in 2023
We’ll state the obvious first: Don’t wear white. This includes shades of ivory, cream and champagne hues, too. “Even certain pastels (like very light yellow and pink) can be colors to avoid if they pull too close to white in person or in photographs,” advises Reese. “If you’re going for a patterned option, it’s also a safe bet to stay away from a dress with a white-based background as well.”
Lastly, Loizou stresses what we’re calling the Goldilocks rule. “Extravagant dresses, headpieces and trains are all a no-go, but you should also avoid being too casual,” she says. Stick with frocks that hit right in the middle like satin midis, one-shoulder styles, jewel and earth tones, etc.
1. Adrianna Papell Metallic Stencil Midi Dress
Adrianna Papell
- Size Range: US 0 to 30
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, lightweight
This faux-wrap dress has all the benefits of a true wrap silhouette with none of the hassle of having to adjust it throughout the day. That said, the belt is adjustable and removable, so you can play around with different ways to knot it or swap it out altogether for something in a contrasting hue or a sturdier silver leather style. Speaking of silver, it’s those dainty metallic flowers throughout that really make this frock stand out, and make it easy to coordinate your jewelry, shoes and bag.
2. Farm Rio Orange Blooming Garden Maxi Dress
Farm Rio
- Size Range: XXS to XL
- Why We Love It: adjustable tie at the back, strapless bra-friendly
Farm Rio is one of our favorite places to pick up cool silhouettes in vibrant, original prints, and we expect this one-shoulder stunner is bound to be one of the brand’s top picks this summer. There is a cutout in back and the bust is adjustable with a tie that is large enough to cover the band of a strapless bra. And the lightweight material has a decent amount of stretch and is highly breathable.
3. Lulus Floral Bustier Dress
Lulus
- Size Range: XS to XL
- Why We Love It: strapless bra-friendly, under $100, adjustable straps
This tiered stunner is one of the best-selling wedding guest dresses at Lulus, with more than 100 rave reviews and multiple colors/patterns to choose from. “This dress is perfect for a wedding guest dress in spring!,” writes Katie P. “Fits perfectly and I love that the straps are adjustable to fit your bust. I got so many compliments on this dress and it was so comfy to wear at the outdoor wedding I went to. 10/10 would recommend this dress to anyone!” It purportedly runs true to size, though some women with smaller busts found the top fit better if they opted for a strapless bra rather than going braless.
4. Diarrablu Satu One-Shoulder Dress
Diarrablu
- Size Range: XS to 3XL
- Why We Love It: Black-owned brand, super comfortable silhouette, machine washable
This breezy silhouette is so flattering and comfortable, but what really made us fall in love with this gown is the unique print. All the brands’ designs are handcrafted in Dakar, Senegal, and made using sustainable materials. Each item is also made to order to further help reduce waste. Some reviews suggest this dress runs a little large, but since it is designed for a flowing fit, we recommend using your bust measurements to determine your size. “This dress is absolutely stunning and exceeded my expectations” says reviewer Emma Joan. “The fabric drapes beautifully. I'm typically a size 28W and wasn't sure the 3X would fit, but it runs large and fits me well. So, I'd suggest sizing down if you're unsure.”
5. Petal + Pup Rosetta Dress
Petal + Pup
- Size Range: US 0 to 16
- Why We Love It: lots of color options, strapless bra-friendly,
This best-selling dress from Petal + Pup is made from a lightweight linen that’s breathable, soft and has just the right amount of stretch. The back of the bust is also smocked to better accommodate larger chests, but multiple reviews do say that this style runs large. So even though with big boobs may find they need to go down one size for the best fit. “Absolutely love this dress,” says Reagan P. “Bought it for a summer wedding and was worried about it being too sheer but it’s perfect. So breathable, too!”
6. ASOS Curve Textured Tie-Front Dress
ASOS Curve
- Size Range: US 12 to 26
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, under $100
This beauty came recommended by fashion influencer Abi Nunn for the spectacular fit and comfortable materials. “It’s giving Bridgerton vibes!” gushed one reviewer. This maxi purportedly runs true to size, but the material does have a bit of stretch to it if you’re between sizes. The tie at the waist is also adjustable, but not removable, so you can have fun playing around with knotting it in front or back.
7. Ieena for Mac Duggal One-Shoulder Gown
Ieena for Mac Duggal
- Size Range: US 0 to 16
- Why We Love It: strapless bra-friendly, lightweight
Just because the dress code says black tie doesn’t mean you have wear only dark colors. This stunning yellow gown feels much more seasonally appropriate than black or navy, but is every bit as formal. Susanne E. writes, “I purchased this to wear at my daughter’s wedding in June. I tried on many different gowns but this was my favorite—very flattering and comfortable too. The fabric is lightweight and floaty and the yellow color would complement a variety of complexions. Definitely a winner!”
8. Hutch Kai Dress
Hutch
- Size Range: XS to XL
- Why We Love It: strapless bra-friendly, breezy silhouette
We’re obsessed with the silhouette of this swingy minidress. It’s flirty, fun and basically begging for a spin on the dance floor. Plus, the red and pink color combo is cheerful and bright without being too in your face. Hutch typically runs true to size, but if you’re unsure, we suggest basing your pick on your largest measurement.
9. By Anthropologie Sweetheart Bubble-Hem Dress
Anthropologie
- Size Range: XXS to 3X, also Petite
- Why We Love It: trendy silhouette, adjustable straps
Who knew the bubble hem would be making a comeback in 2023? Unlike the early aughts minidresses we sported with the voluminous detail, this maxi feels wonderfully modern and fun, aided in no small part by that amazing green hue. (It also comes in black, white, light blue and hot pink.) Reviews say it runs a little large, so you may want to size down. Oh, and did we mention it’s also machine washable? Score!
10. Maeve One-Shoulder Dress
Meave
- Size Range: US 00 to 16
- Why We Love It: strapless bra-friendly, works for multiple seasons
This easy one-shoulder frock is made from an intricate 3D lace that looks every bit as stunning as it feels. We will admit, this dress is a bit heavier than others on the list, and so may not be the best choice for an outdoor wedding in, say, 90-degree weather with 98 percent humidity. But the fit is really worth the splurge, especially considering this gorgeous color combo can be made to work for almost any season. This dress purportedly runs true to size, but there is little to no stretch, so take that into consideration if you are between sizes.
11. Maggy London Asymmetrical Midi Dress
Maggy London
- Size Range: US 14 to 24
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, lightweight, machine washable
We came for the watercolor-inspired floral print, but stayed for that fabulous asymmetrical hemline. The lightweight material and floaty hem and sleeves will feel great and look fabulous as you spin around the dance floor. And who doesn’t love a wedding guest dress you can wear a regular bra with? As for sizing, the material doesn’t offer much stretch, so if you’re between sizes we suggest going up one.
12. Shoshanna Frida Dress
Shoshanna
- Size Range: US 0 to 14
- Why We Love It: strapless bra-friendly, comes with pockets
The combination of the flared A-line skirt and draped one-shoulder bodice makes this dress incredibly flattering and comfortable to boot. Plus, it comes with pockets so you can covertly stow some extra tissues or snacks for the ceremony. Shoshanna dresses tend to run true to size, but when in doubt you can always check the brand’s size guide. (Note: This dress is currently available for pre-order and should be ready to ship on April 17, 2023.)
13. Reformation Butterfly Dress
Reformation
- Size Range: US 0 to 12
- Why We Love It: sustainably made, strapless bra-friendly
This eco-friendly frock is one of our favorites for any basically summer event. The off-the-shoulder neckline is supremely flattering, as is the midi length, and the dress comes in more color options as well. As for the fit, there isn’t much stretch to the material, so we suggest ordering based on your largest measurement to maximize comfort.
14. J.Crew One-Shoulder Cutout Dress
J.Crew
- Size Range: US 00 to 24
- Why We Love It: subtle metallic shine, strapless bra-friendly
A gorgeous black-tie or formal option, this one-shoulder gown has a chic cut-out in back that still allows for full-coverage of a strapless bra. The stunning floral print also has a subtle shine thanks to metallic threads woven throughout. According to PureWow’s fashion editor, getting the right size for this dress depends on a few factors. “If you have a larger bust (maybe DD cup or larger), I’d say you’re probably good to order your usual size. I wear a C cup and found this actually fit better going down one from my usual. The elastic waist was definitely roomy enough and the top wasn’t as billowy in the smaller size.”
15. Mara Hoffman Fila Dress
Mara Hoffman
- Size Range: XXS to 3X
- Why We Love It: adjustable tie belt, neckline can be worn multiple ways, made from GOTS-certified organic cotton
If you want something that’s both eco-friendly and stylish, this Mara Hoffman stunner should do the trick. The elasticized neckline allows you to wear the sleeves up on your shoulders (fully covering your bra straps), or pulled down for a clavicle-baring off-the-shoulder look. You can also cinch in the waist with the removable matching belt or leave it loose for a more casual silhouette. And the lightweight organic cotton will keep you cool even during the hottest mid-summer ceremony.
16. Show Me Your Mumu Claire Midi Dress
Show Me Your Mumu
- Size Range: XXS to 3X
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, tons of color options, fits true to size
The shoulder straps on this midi are not adjustable, but do come with removable bows for an extra feminine touch. That said, the matching satin belt can be swapped out for an embellished or contrasting style if you prefer. Plus, it comes in a whopping 29 different color options, including a ‘60s floral pattern, to sweeten the deal. Some reviewers mentioned having to get the straps altered, particularly those on the petite side. Per one shopper, “This dress is beautiful with such a flattering fit. The neckline is so classy and the slit adds a little sass. The length is perfect, so you don’t need to get it hemmed. The only alteration needed is that the straps are a little long, but the stitching in the straps makes alterations very easy.”
17. J.Crew Cap-Sleeve Gingham Dress
J.Crew
- Size Range: US 00 to 24
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, adjustable front tie, machine washable
Who knew gingham could look so fancy? We love the ruching along the bodice of this gown, and that front tie is fully adjustable so you can knot it behind your neck as a cool halter or simply tie it in a floppy bow if you prefer. And although the material has a similar look and feel to real silk, it’s actually made of cupro, which is more durable and has the added bonus of being safe to toss in the washing machine. Speaking of fabric, this beauty was made using at least 30 percent recycled materials, giving it an eco-friendly bonus that makes it even easier to add to cart.
18. ASOS Embroidered Midi Dress
ASOS
- Size Range: US 0 to 14
- Why We Love It: works for multiple seasons, under $100
Why yes, you can wear black to a summer wedding. The trick is to buy something in a lightweight material and/or flowy silhouette to avoid overheating. This ASOS frock checks both boxes, with the added bonus of delicate floral embroidery to really amp up the summery vibes. Although the front offers full coverage, the back has a pretty keyhole for a subtly sexy touch. (That keyhole does mean your bra would show in back, but for those who don’t want to go braless we think you will do just fine either opting for a pretty black lace number or having a friend help pin the keyhole closed where needed.)
19. Oopscool Off-The-Shoulder Printed Dress
Oopscool
- Size Range: XXS to 3X, also Petite
- Why We Love It: strapless bra-friendly, removable matching belt, breezy silhouette
This cheerful frock has an asymmetrical hem to better show off those stems (and your gorgeous wedding guest shoes), and it comes with a removable belt. We love the extra ruffle detailing along the neckline, and the lightweight material is wonderfully breathable to keep you cool on the dance floor. According to reviews, the vibrant colors are definitely attention-grabbing, so have some fun amping them up with equally colorful accessories, or tone things down with neutral pieces in gold or beige, instead.
20. Tuckernuck Midi Dress
Tuckernuck
- Size Range: XXS to XXXL
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, lightweight, machine washable
This easy midi perfectly bridges the gap between your trusty LBD and a vibrant summer floral. The smocked bodice and A-line skirt also make it an incredibly comfortable option that’s also bra-friendly. Oh, and did we mention it has pockets? Reviewers say it runs fairly true to size, but if you have bigger boobs you might want to consider going up one. “Great dress and super flattering,” writes one reviewer. “So versatile, and it‘s comfy too. I would recommend sizing up if you are bigger in the chest.”
21. Silk Maison French Bow Halterneck Silk Dress
Silk Maison
- Size Range: XXS to XXL
- Why We Love It: made from real silk, adjustable halter tie
This gorgeous maxi has an adjustable halter neck and a stunning open back that hits just low enough to be flattering without scandalizing grandma. And, yes, it comes in less vibrant shades like black or copper, if that’s more your style. According to reviews, this frock runs true to size, and while a regular bra will show in back, sticky cups should fit seamlessly underneath for extra coverage at the bust.
22. Rhode Lulani Dress
Rhode
- Size Range: US 0 to 14
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, flattering silhouette
PureWow’s fashion editor, Abby Hepworth, loves this dress so much she owns it in two colors, and wishes she could justify buying a third. “I’d been eyeing this style for awhile and then finally found it on a resale site and jumped at the chance to try it on—and I’m so glad I did! I will say, the fabric has essentially no stretch and the dress runs small (I’m usually a size 8 but definitely needed a 10 and honestly might have been more comfortable in a 12), but it looks like a dream and made me feel sexy without actually showing much skin. And when a special occasion dress can be worn with a plain ol’ T-shirt bra and granny panties? That’s the dream, folks.”
23. City Chic One-Shoulder Dress
City Chic
- Size Range: US 12 to 24
- Why We Love It: timeless and seasonless silhouette, strapless bra-friendly
This timeless one-shoulder beauty is a great investment and can be worn to just about any cocktail or semi-formal event in any season. The split tulip hem shows just the right amount of leg, and the top offers enough coverage to be compatible with a strapless bra for extra support. It’s also fully lined to help smooth your silhouette. The fabric has very little stretch, so if you’re between sizes you may feel more comfortable in the larger of the two.
24. Eloquii Chiffon Ruffle Dress
Eloquii
- Size Range: US 14 to 28
- Why We Love It: strapless bra-friendly, machine washable
This lightweight stunner can be dressed up for more formal events, or down for more casual cocktails. And the material is breezy to keep you comfortable all night long. Plus, those ruffled tiers will look fabulous as you break a move on the dance floor. Eloquii tends to run true to size, but the material of this frock doesn’t have much stretch, so if you’re between sizes you might be more comfortable with the larger option.
25. Norma Kamali Diana Dress
Norma Kamali
- Size Range: XS to XL
- Why We Love It: very comfortable, strapless bra-friendly
This best-selling stunner is wildly comfortable and looks good on essentially every body type. There are also tons or colors (and some alternative styles) to choose from, so even if this delicate sea green isn’t quite up your alley, we bet there’s a different shade you’ll fall head over heels for. The stretchy material, combined with ruching all along the bodice, makes this dress super comfy and gives you a lot of room to adjust the length or shift how it lays on your frame. It also has a bodysuit built in to help smooth your silhouette further and makes it easier to go bra-free if you like. Reviewer Kelly writes, “I wear this dress so often, I looooove it! So comfortable, butter soft, can boogie all night in it. The inner bodysuit is a little odd at first, but it keeps the dress from riding up, so it's crucial.”
26. Lulus Floral Lace-Up Maxi Dress
Lulus
- Size Range: XXS to XL
- Why We Love It: under $100, straps are adjustable with lace-up detail in back
There’s a beautiful lace-up detail at the back of this dress that lends a sexy vibe without being too overt. It also comes in other hues, but it’s the lavender and pink variation that really stole our hearts. Reviews suggest it runs true to size (although the material has little to no stretch) and is super comfortable, though some found the top to be more revealing than they liked. “I cannot hype this dress up enough,” writes one shopper. “The skirt is multiple layers of fabric that is great quality. The corseted back makes it fit and flattering on everyone. Even works for larger busts!”
27. Show Me Your Mumu Verona Cowl Dress
Show Me Your Mumu
- Size Range: XXS to 3X
- Why We Love It: lots of color options, adjustable straps, material is soft and stretchy
This simple slip comes in a ton of beautiful colors, and we’re honestly tempted to pick up two (or maybe even three) to rotate throughout the season. Some reviewers suggest it runs a little big, but almost all rave about how flattering the draped silhouette looks on multiple body types. Mary W., a reviewer who bought and wore this dress as a bridesmaid in her friend’s wedding, says, “I have more of a curvy body type with a lower belly pooch, so I was worried about this dress accentuating my “problem areas”. I was also worried the dress would look like a potato sack (like other slip style dresses do), but this is such a flattering style. Gorgeous dress, very flattering! I’m actually excited to wear it again.” Add a sparkly belt and statement earrings for a black-tie affair, or opt for more colorful, casual accessories for cocktail dress codes.
28. Mac Duggal Vertical Sequin Sheath Dress
Mac Duggal
- Size Range: US 0 to 24
- Why We Love It: flattering silhouette, works for multiple seasons
Sequins and embellishment can feel heavy for summer, but this sleeveless midi is surprisingly lightweight and will keep you looking and feeling cool all night long. Plus, the vertical design lengthens your figure, while the contrasting beading around the waist nips you in for an hourglass shape. According to reviews, this dress runs a smidge small, so take that into consideration if you’re between sizes.
29. Shani Lace Sheath Dress
Shani
- Size Range: US 2 to 16
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, works for multiple seasons
If an all-black dress feels too heavy for summer, try a black-and-white print instead, like this lace number by Shani. The botanical pattern is a fun take on floral without feeling too old-school. Per one reviewer, “This is such a nice dress. Beautifully made. Substantial material that flatters. Looks exactly as pictured on the site. I ordered my usual size (which is a bit snug these days) and this had a roomy fit on me so I’ll say it runs 1/2 size big.” Indeed, other reviewers say this dress runs a little big, so take that into consideration when ordering.
30. Tanya Taylor Harley Dress
Tanya Taylor
- Size Range: US 00 to 22
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, easy flattering silhouette
It may have been the gorgeous aqua hue that first grabbed our attention, but the delicate floral texture is what really stole our heart. The breezy silhouette will look fabulous on just about every body type, and the V neckline is cut just low enough to feel sexy without giving away the whole farm. Plus, you can easily make this midi work for multiple dress codes with the help of either more casual accessories (like a straw clutch and simple sandals) or formal ones (like dangling statement earrings and strappy silver heels).
31. Adrianna Papell Floral Chiffon Gown
Adrianna Papell
- Size Range: US 0 to 30
- Why We Love It: bra-friendly, adjustable belt
This cheery maxi has so many gorgeous details—the keyhole neckline, knotted waist, floaty sleeves—to separate you from the pack of other floral frocks at the party. The material is also super lightweight to prevent you from overheating—even in mid-July. The site suggests this style runs small, and there isn’t a ton of stretch to the material, so if you’re between sizes you might want to go up one.
32. V. Chapman Lily Dress
V. Champan
- Size Range: US 0 to 14
- Why We Love It: stretchy material, adjustable straps, strapless bra-friendly
We came for the gorgeous Robin’s egg blue color, but stayed for the incredibly flattering (and comfortable) smocked material. The tiers, accented with cascading mini ruffles, conform to your figure while simultaneously masking any lumps and bumps to give you a smoother silhouette. Plus, it comes in multiple solid colors and a handful of prints, if that’s more your vibe. The straps are fully adjustable, as is the removable sash at the waist.
33. Silk Maison Palace Silk Dress
Silk Maison
- Size Range: XXS to XXL
- Why We Love It: adjustable top, made from real silk
This silk stunner has an adjustable tie on the side so you can ensure the top fits exactly right, and a hidden zipper (also at the side) to make slipping in and out of the dress all the easier. And, yes, you can absolutely accommodate a strapless or one-shoulder bra under there without fear of it peeping through on the side or at the back. According to reviews, it runs true to size, but if you’re unsure, we suggest ordering based on your hip or waist measurement as the bust is more adjustable.
34. Anthropologie Elyse Slip Dress
Anthropologie
- Size Range: XXS to 3X, also Petite
- Why We Love It: strapless bra-friendly, material is soft and stretchy, adjustable straps
This Anthropologie slip dress has been a best-seller for the brand for years, both because of the flattering silhouette and the incredibly comfortable (slightly stretchy) material. Seriously, it has more than 350 reviews and a 4.3-star rating, and is constantly being released in fun new colors. Per one reviewer, “I am a curvy gal who is also tall. This dress fits my curves well without feeling restrictive. The subtle cowl neckline gives a little sexy appeal and can easily be worn without a bra.” Many reviewers suggest this dress runs big, and because the material has quite a bit of stretch, you’re likely better off ordering down one (or even two) from your usual size.
