While style is subjective, following the dress code is a must. And Stitch Fix expert stylist Amberly Reese concurs. “No matter the dress code, guests should wear something that makes them feel their best while still honoring the couple’s wedding attire requests,” she says. You don’t want to show up at a black-tie wedding in a cotton mini dress or to a cocktail wedding in an ornate gown. If the couple’s dress code isn’t listed on their wedding invitation or website, take a peek at the wedding venue’s Instagram or website and make a judgment call. Or, check in with other friends attending the wedding to see what they’re wearing. (Just avoid bugging the soon-to-be spouses with these kinds of questions, because they’re busy enough before their big day.)
Season and location take a big part in the decision, too, to ensure you aren’t too hot or chilly during the reception. Plus, you want to be comfortable while you’re dancing the night away.
“If it’s outdoors on a hot day, you’ll want to avoid fabrics that are too thick or aren't breathable,” Reese tells us. “I always recommend my clients choose a dress they can dance and move freely in—silhouettes that are too tight, short or restricting should be avoided to ensure you’re able to have fun and not worry about what you have on.”
What Fabrics Should I Go for to Avoid Overheating?
Staying cool is key for an outdoor wedding during warmer months, especially if you’re groovin’ on the dance floor. Opting for lightweight and breathable fabrics will help you not sweat through your dress. Here, a few fabrics that are made for breathability and won’t weigh you down.
- Chiffon: Super lightweight and sheer (but not see-through, since it’s lined with a lightweight slip underneath), chiffon is made for breathability and low heat retention.
- Satin: This material can easily dress up a simple silhouette, and has a lightweight feel while still looking luxurious and expensive.
- Rayon: The semi-synthetic fibers make up a lightweight weave and it’s made to be breathable since it doesn’t retain heat.
- Polyester: This is a common pick for affordable fashion pieces since it’s pretty cheap to obtain and easy to work with. It’s a lightweight material and is very breathable.
