No matter the season, I’m always reaching for a sweater. In the winter, my goal is to…not die. In the summer, my goal is to survive office air conditioning. (My future is bleak, it seems.) Over the past few years, I’ve become an evangelist for wool. It’s breathable. It wicks moisture. You don’t have to wash it much. It always looks good. It's a key transitional piece and a cold-weather staple. It’s versatile and does the job well. In fact, come winter, the only thing I’m wearing is a sweater. And cashmere? That’s wool leveling up. It has all the same properties, but is soft and so much cozier. The downside? It also has a premium price. However, Quince, known for its famous $50 cashmere, has proven that you don’t have to shell out top dollar for a good sweater. After combing through more than 120 of the brand’s designs, these are the eight PureWow editors have been wearing and loving—some of us have had ours for years.

Per PureWow editors, Quince's oversized boyfriend cardigan has tricked many people into thinking it's a Jenni Kayne Cocoon Cardigan. The generous cut layers easily, with a fisherman-rib detailing and V-neck button-front.  It comes in seven colors, from Deena’s classic gray to Oatmeal, Ivory and Faded Denim.

“My grandmother had a housecoat she practically lived in, something she’d throw on no matter the season. This Quince cashmere oversized boyfriend cardigan feels like the 2026 version of that,” PureWow Fashion and Beauty Director-at-Large Deena Campbell says. “I wear it year-round (layered over dresses in the winter, tossed over tanks on cool summer nights) and it’s unbelievably comfy without ever looking sloppy.”

Quince's structured cardigan is an elevated take on knitwear, with its hourglass shape and dramatic sleeves that say, "Look at me!" It's eerily similar to Jenni Kayne’s $525 Cooper Cardigan, but 30 percent of the price and available in more colors, like burgundy and stripes.

I love the bell sleeves, pockets and structured shape that defines the waist. The knit isn’t as tight as the Cooper and the fit is a little looser, but that does make it an ideal layering piece in transitional weather. I like to throw mine over a sundress in the summer and over jeans or a wool skirt in the winter.

Sometimes you need a closet staple you turn to on a daily basis, and that’s exactly how we’d classify Quince’s famous $50 cashmere crewneck. It comes in 11 colors, including a bold red. The fit is relaxed, but the fabric can still be easily tucked into jeans, trousers and skirts without excess bulk or awkward bunching.

"I wear [Quince's cashmere crewneck] year-round," says PureWow Associate Director of Social Strategy Emily Brozyna. "Whether I'm layering it in the winter or draping it over my shoulders on a chilly summer night, it's easily the most reached-for and versatile sweater in my closet. I've had it for over a year now, and it's still in great condition after many washes. I just run it through the washing machine on the cold hand wash setting and lay it flat to dry, and it's held up beautifully."

Most days I reach for a sweater-shirt, preferring the streamlined look. But some brutally cold days call for more, and that's where Quince's oversized crewneck comes in.

I first received this last year and it’s been in heavy rotation ever since. Consider it the big blanket version of the classic $50 crewneck. The fit is loose with a lot of excess fabric, making it a cozy layering staple. It lends itself well to a half tuck, and I’m particularly fond of throwing it on over a button-up with the collar popped, paired with wide-leg or straight jeans. It’s also great when the weather’s warmer, tied lazily over the shoulders.

Maybe you're a person who finds something they like and then buys it in every color and iteration. So if you loved the $50 classic crewneck, here's something to consider.

This sweater is the nautical version, with fisherman rib detailing that makes you look like you’re ready to spend a summer sailing the Mediterranean. The fit is slightly relaxed for easy layering, but can also be tucked in for a more polished look.

"The Fisherman Cashmere sweater has easily become my go-to layer that I wear from fall to spring," says PureWow Affiliate Director Pam Masin. "It's soft and warm, yet lightweight, which makes it a comfortable choice to wear under bulky winter jackets. It was the first item I ever ordered from Quince and it got me hooked on the brand for their quality and price point."

I appreciate a good turtleneck, but I struggle with the bulk. I loved this design because it combines my obsession with the sweater-shirt silhouette and the added warmth.

Quince’s take on this classic is streamlined—fitted and easy to tuck in, but not restricting. The cashmere is light while still insulating, and also gives enough wiggle room to add a base layer if desired, without feeling stuffy. One morning it was in the 40s and I had opted to forgo a heavier coat and scarf. Though worried about warmth, I was surprised to feel like my neck was overheating. I had to pull down the collar for a bit to cool off. I’ve never been more thankful for ice-cold hands.

The Quince V-neck is another $50 cashmere gem, available in nine colors with a nearly perfect rating averaging over 11,000 reviews. PureWow Vice President of Editorial Candace Davison likes to wear it as a shirt, though she also advises sizing up if you plan to layer.

“It's warm without being stifling. I feel very cozy in it, but never rosy-cheeked and in need of a fan, which is often my issue with cashmere. There's a breathability to it that's really nice. I really like the fit and quality for the price point. It feels foolproof and classic; something you can reach for and feel good in, even if you only have a few minutes to dash out the door.” she adds.

At 5’11’’, Davison did note that a “tall” version of the sweater would have been nice. “This ran a bit tighter/smaller in the arms, though the torso seemed true to size,” she says. “These regular sleeves are already a bit short, hitting just above my watch. So far, I'm sticking to air drying to prevent them from shrinking any further.”

I would wear cashmere in all its forms, though I was admittedly skeptical about a cashmere T-shirt. "Would it actually be warm?" I thought. Turns out, this silhouette is a great transitional piece, especially on warmer winter days.

Quince's version comes in at under $50 and in 11 colors. In higher winter temps (in the 40s), I don’t mind throwing just my Canada Goose parka over the shirt and walking outside.  The T-shirt isn’t bulky, so I can also layer it under other knits for additional warmth. Combined with the fact that it’s super soft, I can see myself wearing it well into spring, since it takes forever for NYC to thaw out into summer.

Quince Cashmere Guide: Pros & Cons

PureWow editors have been wearing Quince cashmere for years, so we’ve got a good understanding of how the pieces wash and wear.

Pros

  • Affordable price points
  • Tons of colors and styles
  • Grade A Mongolian cashmere

Cons

  • Pills more easily than some more expensive brands

What Is Mongolian Cashmere?

Mongolia cashmere, as the name implies, comes from wool farmers in Mongolia. The fibers are supplied by cashmere goats. There are three grades: A, B and C, with quality measured in microns. The lower the micron count, the finer the fiber. Grade A is approximately 15 to 16 microns; Grade B, 16 to 17; and Grade C, 17 to 21. Grade A is considered the highest quality. Quince’s sweaters now exclusively use Grade A Mongolian cashmere.

Washing Cashmere

Before the brand relaunched its cashmere offerings, Quince made machine washable cashmere sweaters. Speaking from personal experience, you should never put your cashmere in the washing machine.

The brand now counsels hand-washing in cold water with mild detergent and then air drying. As someone who owns a lot of dry-clean-only sweaters, I can attest that this is an effective cleaning method, though in general, you should avoid washing as much as possible. And definitely skip the fabric softener. Don’t worry—one of cashmere’s (and wool’s) great qualities is its ability to wick moisture. The breathability means it stays fresh longer.

Yes, That’s Really $50 Cashmere

Quince is famously known for their $50 cashmere, and we included three in our guide—one even comes in at $45. Despite the affordable price tag, the sweaters are made of the same Grade A Mongolian cashmere as the rest of the line.
