Is the Three-Color Rule the Secret to Looking Effortlessly Put-Together? I Put It to the Test

Best Overall

1. SNDYS Lottie Dress

What We Like

  • gorgeous open back
  • smocked waist
  • timeless design
  • under $100

What We Don’t Like

  • hand wash recommended
  • not bra friendly

SNDYS

Former Associate Fashion Commerce Editor Stephanie Meraz fell head over heels for this incredibly comfortable frock while hunting for a more casual version of her beloved SNDYS Tahlia dress. “[The Lottie dress is] made with that same weighty, thick cotton that’s both breathable and sturdy enough to withstand a breeze. And in true SNDYS fashion, it has a smocked waist that I can confirm gives and stretches easily. But what really sold me about this dress—besides the fact that it has the classiest fit—is the gorgeous back cut-out detail that shows just the right amount of skin.”

Baobab

The best wedding guest dresses are those that work for multiple dress codes (check), are comfortable enough to wear for dancing and dinner (check) and that can be styled in a myriad of ways so no one remembers when you don it to countless celebrations (check). The asymmetrical halter on this midi gown is incredibly elegant and just different enough from the usual to feel fresh and interesting. Plus, the fabric strap draped down the back fits right in with current eveningwear trends, yet won’t look dated in a few year’s time. That pale blue hue goes with everything from silver to gold to hot pink and, of course, both white or black. Seriously, this might just be the wedding guest dress to end all wedding guest dresses.

More to Come

Can you ever own too many black dresses? Probably, and yet I’m still majorly tempted to add this gorgeous maxi to my collection to transition my wardrobe from summer to fall. The tie at the bust is adjustable to ensure the bustier silhouette fits you just right. And I appreciate that the wide shoulders can cover the straps of my bra. Reviewers say this maxi fits true to size, but also note that petite folks will likely want to have the length hemmed.

Best Black Minidress

4. Stone Cold Fox Nicky Mini Dress

What We Like

  • fully lined
  • super comfortable
  • versatile design

What We Don't Like

Stone Cold Fox

You’ve got your black maxi dresses and midi dresses, but what about a classic LBD? This halter design is both incredibly fun and wonderfully flattering. The flared shape is balanced by a short hemline and open back, so even petite gals won’t feel overwhelmed by the fabric, and it’s fully lined for added comfort. Dress it up with some gold statement earrings, strappy sandals and a standout clutch, or down with some fisherman sandals and a classic canvas tote.

Best Shirtdress

5. Cleobella Leigh Mini Dress

What We Like

  • fully lined
  • hidden zipper closure
  • has pockets

What We Don't Like

  • dry clean only

Cleobella

You can find a plain white or blue shirtdress in almost anybody’s wardrobe, but a floral print version is truly something special. And the intricate, symmetrical pattern is giving Zimmermann vibes for a third of the cost. The gently puffed sleeves add some fun without being too much of a statement. And the cotton/linen-blend fabric is wonderfully lightweight, even with a full cotton lining. And, yes, there are pockets, too.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Materials: 70 percent cotton, 30 percent linen

Best Denim Dress

6. Show Me Your Mumu Prim Midi Dress

What We Like

  • reportedly fits true to size
  • timeless design
  • flattering seam placement

What We Don't Like

  • no pockets
  • may be too long for petite folks

Show Me Your Mumu

True, denim never really goes out of style, but fall 2025 will see a major increase in denim designs across all wardrobe categories. And this vertically seamed midi is every bit as easy to wear as your go-to jeans or trucker jacket, trust me. The placement of the seams up the front create the illusion of an hourglass silhouette, and the gentle flare of the skirt adds just the right amount of volume, even for petites. That said, some reviewers mention preferring to have the bottom hemmed so they felt more comfortable wearing this beauty with both heels and flats.

FAST FACTS

  • Materials: 57 percent cotton, 22 percent lyocell, 20 percent recycled cotton, 1 percent spandex

Best Vintage Silhouette

7. YLLW the Label Danielle Buckled Dress

What We Like

  • trendy silhouette
  • bra friendly
  • easily transitions from summer to fall
  • fully lined

What We Don't Like

  • hand wash recommended
  • fabric has very little stretch

YLLW the Label

In case you haven’t heard, ‘60s silhouettes are majorly trending right now. Even more so when they’re done in bright colors, just like this vibrant yellow number. The drop-waist shift silhouette with a matching attached belt is giving Palm Springs in all the best ways, with the added bonus of being both comfortable and bra friendly. It’s also fully lined. Wear it now with other colorful accessories and a straw tote, then swap in some knee-high boots and a cropped jacket once temperatures start to drop.

Trendiest Pattern

8. L’Academie by Marianna Polina Midi Dress

What We Like

  • bra friendly
  • versatile silhouette

What We Don’t Like

  • hand wash recommended

L’Academie

This year is all about polka dots, and this gorgeous midi presents them exceptionally well. The dots themselves are a great size that won’t overwhelm petite frames, and I love that the silhouette is bra friendly. The mid-length hem works equally well for office days, dinners out on the town and casual weekend hangs. The twill fabric has enough heft to maintain that flattering shape without much wrinkling (if any), but also won’t cause you to totally overheat—a true winner, if you ask me.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XXS to XL
  • Materials: 97 percent cotton, 3 percent elastane

Best Tie-Front Detailing

9. Steve Madden Clementina Dress

What We Like

  • fully lined
  • trendy detailing
  • has pockets

What We Don't Like

  • dry clean only

Steve Madden

Tie-front tops have been taking social media by storm this summer. But while it can often be tricky figuring out how to wear them without your bra becoming a focal point, this dress gives the same dainty bow detailing but with more coverage up top. The fact that it’s fully lined too means you can pretty much throw on any bra and undies and bop out the door without a second thought. The eyelet lace trim does give a distinctly summery feel, but the rich red hue can definitely transition to fall outfits if paired with deep browns. Oh, and did I mention it has pockets?

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Materials: 100 percent cotton

Best for Big Busts

10. Free People Via Midi Dress

What We Like

  • adjustable tie and functional buttons
  • has pockets

What We Don't Like

  • hand wash recommended

Free People

The tie on the bust of this Free People number is highly adjustable, making it a surprise hit for bigger busts. The buttons down the front are also fully functional, so you can wear this beauty as a tunic top or as a dress. As one 5-star reviewer writes, “The silhouette is beautiful, and you can alter the straps and the bow in front to accommodate a larger chest.” Some shoppers do suggest going up a size from your usual to ensure the buttons just below the bust fit as intended.

Best for Summer Events

11. ASTR the Label Odeletta Dress

What We Like

  • flattering and comfortable fit
  • can be dressed up or down
  • adjustable straps

What We Don't Like

  • dry clean only
  • may be too low cut for some

ASTR the Label

If the back half of the year is jam-packed with baby showers, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and other formal celebrations, you’re going to want to check out this gorgeous blue midi. The flutter sleeves, lace detailing around the hem and peek-a-boo laddering on the bodice all give this frock an inherently fancy vibe that can be played up or down to fit the dress code with the right accessories. And the straps are actually adjustable in back to ensure the bust fits correctly on your frame. Plus, it has pockets that perfectly fit a card for the celebrant so you won’t forget to hand it off.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Materials: 75 percent viscose, 25 percent linen

Best Two-Tone Dress

12. Amanda Uprichard Justine Dress

What We Like

  • fully lined
  • functional buttons
  • reportedly fits true to size

What We Don't Like

  • dry clean only

Amanda Uprichard

Although the two elements of this dress cannot be worn separately, the buttons are functional down much of the top, so you can alternate between a high-neck silhouette and showing a bit more clavicle as you like. I’m obsessed with the juxtaposition between the structured vest and the floaty mini skirt. And while the sky blue top with white bottom is definitely my favorite, it also comes in three other chic color combinations.

  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Materials: 100 percent polyester

Most Comfortable Minidress

13. More to Come Myah Mini Dress

What We Like

  • stretchy material
  • under $100
  • bra friendly

What We Don't Like

  • hand wash recommended
  • only available in one color

More to Come

The smocked bodice of this flouncy mini has ample stretch to move with you throughout the day, without ever feeling constricting. And the ruffled skirt adds just enough flirty energy without being too over the top. This mini is partially lined, so nude-colored undergarments are likely your best bet, but the boatneck and high back do fully cover your bra, so you can wear your favorite supportive T-shirt bra rather than a flimsy, minimalist bralette. Just be sure to hand wash or use a mesh laundry bag on delicate settings to avoid snagging the fabric.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XXS to XL
  • Materials: 60 percent polyester, 40 percent viscose

Best Fit-and-Flare Dress

14. L’Academie by Marianna Akiri Mini Dress

What We Like

  • flattering silhouette
  • bra friendly
  • has pockets

What We Don't Like

  • unlined
  • may be too short for tall folks

L’Academie by Marianna

A fit-and-flare silhouette looks fabulous on just about everyone, and I love that this L’Academie by Marianna number features a wider waistband rather that just a thin stretch of elastic. The pleating around the waist creates a corset-like effect, but is actually quite comfortable and not at all rigid. At just 31 inches in length, this mini may be a tad too short for some taller folks, but should hit just right on petites. And the higher neckline, with an elegant and bra-friendly keyhole, helps to balance such a short length.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XXS to XL
  • Materials: 100 percent cotton

Best Summer Print

15. More to Come Abby Maxi Dress

What We Like

  • fully lined
  • comfortable smocked bodice
  • versatile print

What We Don't Like

  • hand wash recommended

More to Come

Gingham is one of my favorite summer prints. This red-and-white version is fairly small in scale, making it a bit easier to dress up and feel less Picnic Core, for those looking for better versatility. It’s also fully lined and the straps can be adjusted with sliders in the back. While the fabric generally doesn’t have much stretch to it, the smocked bodice is supremely stretchy and comfortable, cinching your waist to create an hourglass figure. If you’re unsure on sizing, I recommend going off your bust measurement, knowing the bottom half of this dress is much more forgiving.
