Quiet moments, profound shifts

Two quiet moments are the defining astrology of the week ahead. This is a week about the stories of Cancer, the new moon and the Mercury retrograde. It’s a week that gets to the heart of the matter, if you can offer yourself wholeheartedly to it.

Sunday the 12th is the heart of the Mercury retrograde. During a Mercury retrograde, Mercury passes between the sun and Earth, and at the mid-point, all three line up. This means that if we could see Mercury, it would be exactly in the middle of the sun. This moment, called the ‘cazimi’ by astrologers, represents the renewal of Mercurial principles. It is like a ‘new moon’ but instead of the moon, it’s Mercury.

On this day, while Mercury is in the heart of the sun, the possibility of clarity, even in the midst of the retrograde, shines through. It is on this day that whatever we’ve been dealing with during the retrograde becomes a little clearer. If you have time to meditate, journal or use a reflective practice to connect with yourself, deep intuitive bubbles can rise into your mind and offer some clarity.

We’re not out of the forest of the retrograde, but after the 12th, we’ve acquired a sense of our true north and can use that to emotionally navigate the final weeks.

On Monday the 13th, Venus confronts Uranus, challenging relationship status quos. This can bring to light issues of feeling repressed or unsatisfied in relationships or it can be the surprise opportunity for a new relationship from an unexpected source. A word of caution against beauty procedures on this day—they are unlikely to go as planned, unless you are planning a radical change of appearance.

The new moon in Cancer takes place on Tuesday the 14th. The new moon is simple in appearance—it does not really involve any other planets by aspect, with the exception of Mercury. Because the Mercury-Sun cazimi took place only two days prior, Mercury is still snuggled in when the sun and moon come together. There are two implications here: As the beginning of a new lunar month, it makes the Mercury retrograde story and its resolution a key theme of the next lunar cycle. This means that even after Mercury returns to direct motion on the 23rd, the pearls of wisdom gained will be relevant long thereafter.

The other implication is that each of us is involved in a deeply personal and subjective journey, hidden from the frenetic business of the outside world. Holding the tension between inner and outer life is a beautiful and enigmatic part of the human experience and is quite pronounced this week and month. This can look like having to behave normally even while carrying deep emotions or feeling inspired to step into a new life while on the surface having to maintain the mundane.

As the moon becomes visible again over the weekend, the pace will pick up as it enters the waxing half of the cycle.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Your home is your history and your foundation, and your relationship to it changes throughout your life. Where you call home has been a big topic for the last year, and this Mercury retrograde invites you to integrate all you have learned. This week, take time to be in your space, tend the hearth, and reflect on how to build a foundation that serves as a soft place for you to return to in your adventurous life.

This week’s mantra: “center”

Cheeky illustration of a young non-binary person petting a bull.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

You've been figuring out who you can trust in your community (professional or familial) over the retrograde. Your calendar has also likely experienced a contraction and prioritized peace above overexerting yourself. Enjoy the break and set your new moon intention around how to bring more of it into daily life.

This week’s mantra: “contentment”

Cheeky illustration of identical twins with long dark hair and a statement earrings back-to-back, smirking at each other.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Your resources are a deeply personal thing, Gemini. Whether they provide a sense of safety or are used to care for others, how you get them and how you use them has been the center of this Mercury retrograde. Stepping into an empowered stance requires soul searching as to how the use of your resources aligns with your personal values. Their true values lie in how you use them.

This week’s mantra: “budget as ritual”

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Your relationship with your own body—not the one you wish you had or the one you had ten years ago—has been a major focus of Mercury’s time in your sign. Stress, tension or any kind of neglect may have brought up issues that demand to be addressed. This week brings the insight, the softness and the plan for how to take care of your primary instrument and honor all it does for you.

This week’s mantra: “embody”

Cheeky illustration of a woman of Asian-descent wearing a sheer coral top with her hair half-up in pigtail puns, the rest down. She is hugging a lion, who is smirking.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

Leo, there have been some unexpected turns of events over the last couple of weeks. Some likely came out of your blind spot and hit you with emotions. This retrograde and this week's new moon happen in the astrological house of your most private thoughts and feelings, so solitude has a gravitational pull on you. Wherever you can, withdraw. Your season comes soon and loudly.

This week’s mantra: “cocoon”

Cheeky illustration with a light blue background of a woman wearing a coral shirt coyly poking out from behind her hands.

Virgo (August 23 - September 23)

Virgo, your ruling planet in retrograde always has a profound effect. This time Mercury has been exploring your experiences of belonging, and who you find that feeling with. You have the highest standards for worthiness, so being around people who feel safe enough for you to find your chill is gold. If you're feeling at a loss, use the new moon to set the intention of creating spaces of belonging.

This week’s mantra: “tribe”

Libra (September 23 - October 21)

There's been so much change in all the things that you thought mattered over the last year. Mercury has been surveying it all and changing the context of your ‘life purpose’ sector. After the new moon on the 14th, you get to decide what it all means, and set a new intention aligned with your deepest calling. Your ruling planet Venus disturbs the peace and offers forgotten gems.

This week’s mantra: “ambitions realized”

Scorpio (October 22 - November 21)

This Mercury retrograde has been about recalibrating your internal compass. Where you thought you were headed a year ago likely bears very little resemblance to the horizon you gaze at now. The beauty of the story lies in the path of coming home to yourself and exploring the world from a place of deep connection, instead of misguided loyalties to forces outside of you. Reflect on the direction you feel called to, and take a step toward it—or at least map out the route.

This week’s mantra: “align”

Cheeky illustration of a Black woman with purple hair on an orange background. She's in a wearing jean jacket, with a quiver strapped across her back and arrows sticking out.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Sagittarius, the retrograde has been about your karmic debts and how much you feel obligated to others. When Mercury and the moon renew themselves through contact with the sun, both your psychological and emotional expectations get reset. Let go of old hurts and set new intentions for deep emotional bonds free of guilt.

This week’s mantra: “forgive”

A cheeky image of a woman of color with dark hair holding a pink goat by the horns. The background is pink and her shirt is darker pink.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

Your primary relationships have been the focus of the current Mercury retrograde. Whether it's reconnecting with an old friend, returning to the conversation with a lover or renegotiating the terms of a contract, how you show up and communicate has been quite the focus. The new moon resets your playbook, integrating everything new you’ve learned.

This week’s mantra: “reconnect”

Cheeky image of a Black woman with blue hair on a light blue background. She's holding blue water in her palms, which is bubbling up and taking shape as her hair.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

Mercury has been negotiating a new relationship with what your days look and feel like, how you treat your body and maintain health and how much labor you take on. You know when you’re staying in your window of tolerance because you can make it through the day without crashing out, emotionally or physically. This week is about taking it easy and letting whatever you can do peacefully be enough.

This week’s mantra: “calm”

Cheeky illustration of a gender-fluid white person with short-cropped orange hair. They're wearing a light blue halter top as two bright pink koi fish circle their head.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

Your own creativity and children have been the focus of the current Mercury retrograde. You need emotional safety to fully express yourself, and there’s no way around it. If your voice has been stunted by other’s dismissals or forcefulness, it’s time you reclaim it. Not by show of force, but by speaking your whole hearted emotional truth.

This week’s mantra: “courage”
